I actually like the 72. The F hole and WRHB make it appealing to me. I saw a mint Squier 51 at the Guitar show last weekend for $150 and it's really hard for anyone to pay $800 for the Fender 51 when the Squier version is so cheap. I almost picked it up but I wasn't interested.Lucamo wrote:I'd really love to see a proper demo, and by proper I mean one by PGS.
Of the mustang, screw the 51 and 72

I am actually watching this right now. Video demos of 72 and the Mustang Special. Both sound great. No love for the Fender '51 I guess.

Wow, massive ass strings like 11s! Madness! I don't know how that would work without snapping the neck and/or their fingers.I would whack 11s on it and drop it down to drop C
Seriously, I put 12s on a strat tuned to C. It's too slack to be really stable and doesn't quite intonate.
*EDIT* Just noticed the almost finished JD bottle atop the Blackstar, that explains an awful lot...

I want to like that stang but not my cup of tea. Why did they lose the tremolo and change the decal!? It's supposed to be a pawnshop series
and realistically speaking, I'm sure if a modded 'stang showed up in a pawnshop, it'd still have those two things in tact.
They do look nice, but I gotta say, at the price of this, I'd take a 65 RI or even '69 over this any day.

why did they change the decal? the body, trem and pickups are all a great deal different from a mustang. actually, I don't think they should have called it a mustang at all. if anything it's more like a wack, hacked up, duo-sonic. the only thing similar to the mustang at this point is the scale, which means nothing really, as the scale is shared with five fender guitar models.

You have odd ideas of stable. I just looked on the D'Addario website. A 12 gauge set with plain G has average tension of 24.68 lb, downtuned to C that would be 15.5 lb. That's more tension than 10s get on a Mustang in standard E, and most people find that plenty comfortable. And if he means drop tuning to C, that's more than suitable tension.AddamInsane wrote:Wow, massive ass strings like 11s! Madness! My point exactly...it ain't no stang. But then again, I guess it is if Fender wants to name it so. Similar, and very opinionated discussions came out when the classic player series hit stores a few years back about them not actually being "Jazzmasters" and "Jaguars"Mages wrote:why did they change the decal? the body, trem and pickups are all a great deal different from a mustang. actually, I don't think they should have called it a mustang at all. if anything it's more like a wack, hacked up, duo-sonic. the only thing similar to the mustang at this point is the scale, which means nothing really, as the scale is shared with five fender guitar models.

i think what they were thinking was to make a guitar that could've been an old 'stang that has been modded/customized in the 70s or 80s. we see those hackjobs all the time. and they were usually to be found in pawn shops (before ebay).Mages wrote:why did they change the decal? the body, trem and pickups are all a great deal different from a mustang. actually, I don't think they should have called it a mustang at all. if anything it's more like a wack, hacked up, duo-sonic. the only thing similar to the mustang at this point is the scale, which means nothing really, as the scale is shared with five fender guitar models.
some of those modders would slap their own logos and stuff on the headstock (like danocaster, rhoney, andrewdoeshair, etc. over at OSG and here)... so instead of just leaving it being a "mustang" they'd write something with magic marker or so on the headstock.
but it does look odd/ugly.
but i'm not as closed-minded on the idea of the "guitars that never were", etc. (i don't mean that adjective as an offense, btw)
like that, guitars like the super-sonic, jagmaster and even the jag-stang were born, too.
anyways... that blue mustang has got me boner'd, big time. i'd just slap a jag vibrato on it and rock it til it'd burst!!!
Pat.
my name is Pat.
at least they called it "mustang special". I suppose that's kind of like "telecaster deluxe" which is nothing like a real telecaster.
I think the whole "pawnshop" thing is just marketing BS. obviously the squier '51 wasn't made with any pawnshop thing in mind.
and yeah, I like that they're coming up with new ideas, I really want to like this mustang special but the weird chopped up body is just stupid to me. I don't understand why anyone would want that.

That and seems like everyone and their uncle decided to strip all the original finishes down to bare wood. WHY?!James wrote:I think the body quite suits the style, and as witnessed here many times, hacking the body isn't that uncommon on modified mustangs.

Yeah. These Mustangs are essentially what I was looking to achieve with my Jagmaster build (short scale, hardtail, bright and full pickups). Made me wince a bit since it'd save a lot of hassle just buying on. But even so, the whole project (guitar and all the replacement parts) has cost me just 1/3 of what one of these would be.

Maybe I was being a little facetious, but that's just my opinion, gained from my experience.honeyiscool wrote:You have odd ideas of stable. I just looked on the D'Addario website. The particular guitar I'm refering to is a cheap early '80s Strat copy.
Surely I cannot be the only one who finds a de-tuned guitar needs reguar re tuning?
BTW, I had tuning stability issues on an ET270 with similar stock tuners. Swapped them for Wilkinson Deluxe's (kluson copies) and upped the string size and had no problems since.
Nah, it's my experience from seeing many metal bands live that detuned strings tend to go out of tune easily
