Chord Gliding w/Reverb

I was'nt sure where to put this as no forum is specifically for Techniques. So, after some feedback in the diary thread i've put it here. I know a few others have done similar videos (Reece, Hurb, etc) and it would be nice if they could dig them out.

This is nothing new but the technique has always fascinated me, typical of My Bloody Valentine and less so Swervedriver, The Telescopes etc. Soaked in Hall Reverb the technique replicates some of the guitar work on 'Loveless' (MBV). Without Reverb it is more reminiscent of the sound heard on songs like 'you never should' off 'Is'nt Anything'.

The Fender Jaguar tremolo system is ideal for the technique as the pivot point is central to the palm of your hand and also a subtle system, but you can create this effect with a Strat tremolo and possibly others.
The idea is to release or 'glide' chords up to pitch using the tremolo arm. It is very subtle and you dont need to drop the bar far, maybe a semi-tone. Firstly i tried to get the camera up close to see this, then did the same but at an angle.

Reece went for the reverse setting on the Marshall Reflector version, gonna try that. The EHX one is ace, i like how he actually uses MBV riffs.

Empires: My set up is quite humble in comparison;
Marshall Reflector, Hall Reverb, all knobs at 3 o'clock (just before it gets messy)
Line 6 Amp, 'Metal' setting

Fender Jag-Stang, Bridge Humbucker.

The chords are important, i used sus2 and add9 chords. They create a tension and need for resolve, MBV used these chords in some songs although the one Reece covered i think they are 7th chords.

I'll need to try that out with my Reflector, I've not ever tried the really 'swamping' reverb side of it...

Used the reverse mode in the studio this weekend. It's flavour of the month.

Am I right in saying they don't make them anymore?

back when i had a delay pedal, i once fucked with that thing like 4hrs straight doing some similar stuff, it was instant shoegaze. then i did coke and laid in bed listening to slowdive.

the important thing here is you want near or at 100% wet on the reverb.

warning: chord gliding can be very addictive, and is pretty rough on the strings - a sure fire way to deaden your new set in under a week.

With some tweaking I managed to get my mustang trem to glide pretty well without slipping out of tune too much. I am surprised/disappointed I cannot get my strat to do the same.

Funnily enough, it's the strat trem I found most suited doing this, in that you hardly have to touch it.

Also, thanks for inspiring me to play around with these techniques... I don't really have a delay, but I used one of the stock delay/reverb settings on my Mustang amp, and it was workin alright. It's a fun sound to play with.

The rv600 is a nice little pedal, i tend to leave mine on the "space" setting most of the time tho - gives a nice U2/edge feel and sounds great with a little delay.
