I just started messing with poly finishes a few weeks ago. Refinished some of the missus furniture for her. I love poly cause it cures quick. Lacquer you gotta hang it for a month before you can touch it. Plus with poly you can open up the color spectrum, your not restricted to a handful of colors. I've not been able to find any locally who can mix up my colors, everyone is about 45 minutes away. I need to start asking some car guys where they get their stuff mixed locally. Can't wait to see your color. What type of set up are you planning on using to spray?
I was going with the system three poly. But I went with auto paint in a spray can. http://www.automotivetouchup.com
I have a wagner hvlp that I would have used with the poly. I have had good results with it. The system three topcoat is water soluble, so you thin with distilled water to the correct density and then filter with paint filter and shoot. Easy clean up too. The paint lays out nice and you if there are any minor problems when spraying you can take a dry foam brush and just brush the top lightly.

I love this paint, and I think they can do custom colors. I used it on the boat I built.

Gosh, that's so cool you can clean up with bubbly soap & water. They are starting to release more and more water based lacquer now... StewMac even released water based grain filler that they swear by. Oil based fillers, take forever to dry and stick to your nails for days. Cool to see more water based stuff coming along, don't have heath issues & clean up issues with that stuff.
Got the paint in today. Weather was perfect and light breeze and no bugs. Had to coach soccer so got a late start but managed to get 4 nice coats on it. Wished I could have got 2 coats of clear on it tonight but it is too dark and cooling down. Paint is really nice and it has a very nice pro quality spray tip.
Pictures are in order of coats 1-4. 5 minutes between first two coats and then 10 minutes between coats 3 and 4. Sorry for shitty pics only had my cell phone on me and wasn't about try and go for good pics when I was psyched about painting.
I had sanded to 800 after white primer coat. Auto guys said they only g0 to 400- 600 between coats. It is laying down so nice I think that I can go right to clear coat. Then go to from 1000 to 2000 or maybe straight to polish. Will have how it goes and play it by ear.
Any pro tips [joey ] welcome. When I get to this point in a project my main goal is to not do too much at once and fuck it up. will polish and then see if I need to back up to paper.

OK couple of better pics while drying in laundry room. It is dry to touch but letting dry overnight inside.

I've been pretty quiet (i.e. completely silent) in this thread, but I have been watching. I've gotta say, this thing is turning out tits. I absolutely love it... and I generally don't care for orange.

I hit it with 1000 grit last night. Nice and smooth. It got a little thin in a couple spots so I just gave it a spot or two in the thin parts. Will be clear coating in about 20 minutes. Will do a tester to make sure it sprays nice and to get the feel of the new can. They say make it go on wet looking but not too thick that it drips.
NOW WITH PHOTOS
Thing went better than expected. The front has an almost perfect finish. Still need one thick wet coat on the back. All it needs is a polish I think. But I did fumble it bringing it into the house and put a thumb print in it. Arrow points to bad thing. Thought it was dry but not totally dry I guess. So I have some 2000 grit and will try and lightly buff it out in a couple of days. You can see yourself in it

Well way back on the second page I said I was thinking of Ford Mustang Grabber Orange. By wife told me that it looked like a Home Depot sign. That put me off a little until I saw the porsche orange with gloss on it that you posted. So you picked the orange for me. Thanks.hotrodperlmutter wrote:jeemeny fucking christmas.
I WAS JUST KIDDING WHEN I SAID ORANGE BRO!!!!!!1
I could just kill myself for the thumb print, but I should have that fixed and the whole thing done soon. It is storming out now so don't know when I will get a chance to paint again.
