Today my '72 musicmaster bass arrived in the mail. This thing looks like it's brand new (by guitar center standards). There's only one chip on the upper horn. I've only played it through a practice amp and it sounds very mellow. This combined with the smallish string spacing makes it beg to be played with a pick. It came with the adorable little original case and even had the manual!

Small headstock! Small tuners (are they stock?)! Looks like it would balance a lot better than the later Musicmaster Basses.

I love it.

Are you gonna gut the wiring? I'm not a fan of the mud circuit in these basses, and the pickup's a little shoddy. I made about $70 off the stock pickup on Ebay, which was more than enough to get me a replacement pickup that actually sounded good.

Minty - quite a score!

My next gear purchase will be one of these or a Moog MG-1.

^ man, I'd love to have an MG-1, or any moog.
The tuners are stock. All of the musicmaster basses had these until the mid 70's when Fender started putting full size tuners on, probably so they could use the same necks on these and on Mustang basses.
As for the electronics, it's made it this far without being screwed with, so i'd hate to be that dude, especially since I don't know how long i'll hang on to it. I kinda like the cheap muffly sound it has. If i wanted something that sounded any different, i'd have bought a different bass.

Anyone know why these things have 2 caps on the tone pot?
I'll take better pics tomorrow when I have sunlight and a real live digital camera.

I agree, I like the tone of my Musicmaster stock, that's why I bought mine, not to make it sound like something else. Have fun with it man!

The 2 caps is what Honeyiscool was talking about, it's what gives it that darker, muddier tone.
