With the stuff my band plays I need varying levels of distortion. Although I have quite a few 'effects' on my board they're not necessarily vital. I'd go for a Big Muff type pedal and Rat.
Boost and a superfuzz. All I generally use anyway.
Could probably scrap the boost if I used higher output pickups, but no amp by itself sounds like a Superfuzz. Maybe swap in a wah. Space echo in the effects loop.
Right now i'm using a Pitchblack and an M13. I guess most of my sound comes from my Bassman and a Boost Comp model to boost it to overdrive more.
No M13 I'd do Pitchblack > random boutique magic transparent overdrive pedal > Bassman
the drive channel on my amp can take care of a lot of great overdrive to fuzz sounds so if you discount its footswitch I would have the Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai and a boost pedal. The Stereo Man can take care of so many different delay, reverb & modulation sounds and the looper while awkward at times is a nice thing to have to play with. The boost would be to get more out of the 2 channels on the amp.

Assuming that a tuner isn't included... I only have three pedals that I use with any frequency, Fulltone DP-1, Marshall Jackhammer and Boss Bass Chorus. I could easily pare it down to just the DP-1. My amps don't provide dirt, really (solid state bass amp, Fender Twin Reverb), so I need a pedal for drive.

That's all I used for a gig last week. It sounded great and had all the amp sounds I wanted. I didn't mention it in my reply though because if I had the ideal amp (JVM maybe?) I'm not sure I would use it.
Yup, for me I would always go for a great Marshall amp if I had the choice, but a great drive pedal or two and a Fender amp is a great backup.
In the future I'll probably consider throwing my Harley Benton "American Sound" (Tech21 Blonde Clone) and my Dual Drive into my gigbag as an adequate backup for going through the PA in the case of amp failure. Seriously impressed.
+1 with mikes post. i'm quite happy to stick to a tuner and just plug in to my DT. it has 2 great channels which can get pretty much any sounds that i'd need.
that being said, playing with the band i tend to have the OCD with me at least for a little boost or lighter OD flavour. i tend to use a few effects depending on whats on the setlist, but more often than not it's down to the OCD and MXR phase 45.
so for two pedals it'd be OCD and phase 45 (i'd use my clip on tuner for that)
