what is the thing on the Jazzmaster tremelo system?

Buzzstop; it increases the break-angle over the bridge, improving sustain and reducing bridge buzz. Consequently, it reduces behind the bridge sympathetic harmonics too... some feel this is good, others, not so much.

I'd try it out until I feel like I've given it enough use to get a feel for it... then take it off.
