NGD! Warning pointy 80s Ibanez content!! ;)

Post by rps-10 »

Got another basketcase of an RG550 off ebay, it just arrived. I know these guitars don't get much love around here but who cares, as this is about the only guitar related forum I've been on that I've liked. (one day I will get another shortscale I promise)

Sold as spares or repair as it's trem is slightly broke and the locking nut bits are missing.

It's also been refinished, rattle can spray by the smell of it  Has a wonky non original scratchplate which leads me to believe it might notactually be a 550 body but some other variant RG shape, the end of the neck doesn't seem to be in the pocket properly either.
It does however have a perfect Wizard neck, no cracks in it at all! so that is worth the price I paid in itself.

Man that lower horn is point!

Not my bag, but, if it floats your boat...
Should be fun to fix up, if nothing else. That scratch plate is... I dunno if I appreciate the concept, or just plain think it's whack :P

Them knobs suck big time, but RG550s are ace guitars, proper versatile instruments. I like. 8)

Hell yeah dude, the ibanez rg 550 is a great guitar. Lately i've been going old school ala westex, but the ibanez RG is still a favorite. If you're gonna replace pups i recommend the cruch lab/ liquifire combo!

Yeah the white speed knobs are a bit out of place, they went straight away. I've replaced the pickguard with a plain black one. Electrics are fine, really like how the old Ibanez/DiMarzio pups sound especially the split humbucker & single coil sounds.

I too don't participially like the colour coded headstock theme of these guitars, much prefer a black one that the odd one came out of the factory with, but yeah these are pretty much very workman like guitars capable of a wide range of tones once you get past the 80's aggressive Ibanez endorsements and marketing.

(slight addition edit) and yeah the trem on it is fucked. No way in a month of Sundays could this guitar get into tune let alone intonate. ~5mm missing off the low end knife edge.

Do like, except the blocks look dumb and would lose the coloured headstock, plain with logo would be better.

Wasted half a day today trying to get an Edge Pro trem into this thing. Result was action you could ride horses under, so went back to the cheapo ebay Floyd Rose knock off.
Installed a kill switch button and replaced those white speed knobs with some Mustang push on lookalikes.

To me the RGs now look a tad dated however they play soooooooooooo nice ! Very smooth and great sustain even with shitty old strings . The 2 I used to play in when I was younger were RGs and Jackson Dinkys ...
