Free Guitar Day - 'Vintage' branded SG

Post by othomas2 »

Boss was on one today wanting to get rid of any clearance items that weren't functioning as should be....

I did pretty well, I took home an SG

Image

Things wrong:
- Damaged 'D' machinehead
- springs missing on neck pup
- washers & nuts missing on pickup selector, volume / tone & jack socket.
- Missing knobs
- Missing switch tip

Personally I think these are on par with Epiphone if not better but I'll make a better judgement once it's put together. We haven't sold these for at least 2 years whenever the Gibson dealership thing took place. I am tempted to paint it white !! Not keen on cherry but it aint that bad... some nice grain.

I've done a fair amount of setups now so I wanna see how good of a guitar I can turn this into... test my skills !!

Crappy day but this made it worthwhile....

Anyone help on nuts / washers ?? :)

It'd be cool to pick something like this up and put in the Zappa wiring circuit he used in the baby snakes sg. 8)

My mate's had two of these, we swapped the pickups out and it suited him down to the ground.

I got it in a playable condition today.

It really is quite nice & as I remember years back. IMO, better than an Epiphone G400 !

It now has jag / stang knobs.

Pickups don't sound that bad to me...

... still I'm struggling to find a single machine head. Either a wilkinson deluxe version as it came with or any applicable single replacement. A pack will be £25.

Think I'm going to to buy the plastic key on its own and do it that way.

Think I will flip it once I'm done...

Frank had a load of active circuity type stuff in that SG he used to use. Same with the later heavily modified strats.

I had the chance to play a "Vintage" brand guitar when I bought my amp a few months ago. The old fella I bought it off had a "Vintage" Les Paul copy and it played loverly, a very well setup guitar.

I had a Vintage EVH Music Man copy, the neck was nice and it had a decent sound but the licensed Floyd was unusable. Based on that i can imagine the hard tail models being pretty decent for the money.
Apparently, the guitarist from old school rockers 'Saxon' uses a Vintage SG on tour. I read an interview and he said he got tired of customs throwing his Gibsons around and in one case misplacing one.

When I saw Future of the Left, Falko was using a Vintage SG. Sounded pretty awesome to me.

I've seen a few lately, most notably The Smears guitarist using a Les Paul. Sounds great on the recordings and live it sounds like most set-neck Les Paul types.
I dunno, Vintage is one of them brands like Cort that attracts players that just want a decent guitar for their money. They'll never be love for them round most forums because they are'nt cool enough.

Maybe that will change as all guitar shops know that Lord Jesus Wilkinson has a hand in them now. Like he appeared in the Vintage factory and laid on hands and made them mojorific whilst uttering prayers to himself. At least that's the kind of impression I get on how he's viewed..
