Got some extra wallpaper laying around?

Painting? Routing? Set-up tips? Or just straight-up making a guitar from scratch? Post here, and post pics!

Got some extra wallpaper laying around?

Post by doober314 »

My parents had a roll of wall paper in their closet that they weren't ever going to use, so I grabbed that and slapped it on a guitar. It's floral but whatever. Looks pretty good to me.

Here's what I did to my Mockingbird.

Just traced out the pattern, glued all the pieces down, and went nuts with the clear coat.

Took a while because paper doesn't work well going from a flat face to a curved edge.

Heavy coats of gloss to try and get it to look like porcelain.

One of the easier bits to do.

And done... I guess.

There's still a lot of wallpaper...

Might not work out too good with Fenders and all the contours (unless you're super patient), but a cheapo acoustic or something with sharp edges should be really easy to do if any this appeals to you.

Looks as though it's melting into the wall in this shot.

There's a lot of guys over at reranch doing the same thing with fabric. They mostly do the front and back and then burst the edges.

How much clear did you have to use?

From a distance you can't really tell. Up close, those curved edges can look a mess. The wallpaper pattern hides it sort of well though. I'll try to get some pictures of that when I head back home.

I'll have to check out some of their guitars. I know I was trying to do something like the paisley telecaster. Thought it would look better without the burst, plus I don't know how to do a burst.

Probably used 2 or 3 cans of clear coat in the end.
