^ But now I need to find one I can afford second hand. There's the HH model, which is a nice alternative but I'm not sure I'd like it as much, even if it has cool features. In terms of what I'd need to change, I could live with that guitar Stock(though I'll probably be changing the Rhythm section to a "Humbucking" section, if you get me, in series, presumably a minor mod though). The HH I may be able to too, but it seems more likely I'll have to change the pickups - the pickups on the SS are great.
I'm going nuts checking various "For Sale" sites looking for one... can't wait until this is finally over and I have my new guitar, haha. Anyone else gone through this? It sucks being poor and wanting a decent guitar, I guess.
I'm still open to being talked out of it, if I've made the wrong decision. I could post what music I'm interested, etc. to make sure it's the right choice for me. Basically I like a lot your "alternative" type stuff, and play guitar over electronic music mostly, so I need something that can sound interesting and versatile. I also need something ballsy enough to do high gain now and again, for industrial type tones, which is why I chose the the CP over the CIJ, I also believe it's slightly lighter. I like to have more texture to my mid gain tones especially, which is why I'm looking at offsets in the first place, Strats and especially HB based guitars sound too "straight forward" for the most part.
I'm chosing a Shortscale as I often play things that require me to jump around the fretboard and I have a bad wrist which doesn't agree with it, and I have a habit of doing Andy Summers chords too. I'm chosing a Jag over a Jazzmaster as there was no one Jazzmaster model that fully pleased me. The CP Jazzmaster was close, but it did sound a bit duller on cleans when I listened back to it, compared to a real Jazzmaster, or the CP Jag. I'm chosing the Jaguar over the Mustang as I like the aesthetics more, and the extra (potential for modding) tonal options. I'm also chosing the CP in specific as I'm not good at dicking around with modding, and the reason I'm getting a new guitar is partly to get a reliable one, which seems to be what a sufficiently modded Offset can be, and these are essentially "Sufficiently modded".
I tend to like the scratchy tone of a Jag. One of my favourite bands is Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, who use a Jaguar mostly. It is the Japanese one, I'm unsure if the pickups are stock of not, however with the strangle switch and the tone controls, or a bright amp, I'm sure I can approximate it. I also play a lot of goth rock, and the trad goth tone tends to work best with clangy single coils - like on a Tele or Jag. It's not too common to see a Jag in that genre though since it came before the explosion in the 90s, so it's both well suited and not overdone in that genre. I also think it'd make a good "Trip Hop" guitar if that makes any sense, since I'm doing a lot of electronic stuff. <- this sort of tone you can get with a lot of different guitars, but you need the right pedals/amp. From what i've heard, it's easier to get that sort of nasty tone on anything with a Jag(I think it's actually a JM - one being used here - If anyone knows for sure, let me know). Teles are meant to be good at it, but a lot of the time they're too "honky" for me.
I also much prefer the bridge pickup of an offset guitar to most guitars. Teles are great for lightly overdriven tones, but the upper mid spike/honk makes it sound awkward for cleans. A Strat, Jag or JM tends to be more Jangly and the offsets have more character than the Strat which can sound plainer in that position. I'm also thinking that having a lot of different switches to play with will make for a more fun guitar experience in general, combing some of what i like of both synth and guitar.
Is my reasoning correct?
