Got my first Jaguar today. Candy apple red with a matching headstock. Research tells me that's the "Crafted in Japan" deal means it's from 97 or 98. A few dings here and there, but not a big deal. The previous owner swapped out the original bridge for a TOM and threw in a buzzstop. Neat.
The previous owner also said he swapped out the pots. It looks like they're both 1M pots and there's a pretty melted looking resistor between them. He told me that this is why the knobs are telecaster type chrome knobs because the old ones didn't fit. Weird. So I need to find some Jaguar knobs.
There's also a different bridge pickup in there. It has cloth wiring instead of the PVC stuff, but I have no idea what it is since it doesn't really say anything. Best part about it is that the wires from this pickup are connected and wrapped with packaging tape. Total MacGyver points there.
I went down to my local guitar shop and told one of the workers that I was looking for Jaguar parts. I went off to the parts section and I then heard one of them say to the person that was helping me, "What's a Jaguar?" They usually have better people working. These people looked new. But I did walk out of there with some free Fender Jazz Bass knobs.
So, here's what I'm looking to do to get it back to it's original shape:
-figure out what pots should be in here
-figure out what kind of resistor should be in here
-see if the Jazz bass knobs are the same as Jaguar knobs
Also looking to get the pickups to match by either getting a new set or figuring out what I have in there so I can swap one out. Anybody have recommendations on pickups (hopefully sub-$100) and a parts list?
Thanks!

Take the serial number to the Fender website at it'll tell you when it was made. Crafted in Japan instruments were made and available outside of Japan until fairly recently.doober314 wrote:Research tells me that's the "Crafted in Japan" deal means it's from 97 or 98.

They're not everywhere, but not even knowing what it is?? Geez.

Exactly the same as my Jaguar.doober314 wrote:Got my first Jaguar today. Candy apple red with a matching headstock. Research tells me that's the "Crafted in Japan" deal means it's from 97 or 98. The old dude probably replaced the pots if they are normal sized, the Japan pots are smaller. This would explain the "old knobs didn't fit" part. Either way, they are the right value so you needn't worry. The guitar store that sold a guitar I had on hold has no idea what Jaguar's or Duo Sonic's are. It's sad really. They should have their employees read a fender book or something.

Nothing changes there then.
The original caps are .03 mfd i believe, 1meg audio pots. Depending on what pots the guy fitted the shafts may be too wide in diameter but considering he put Tele knobs on i'd imagine Jag knobs would fit.
Awesome. The guitar is definitively in the 97-98 range. CIJ serial number starting with an A. Cool.
Sort of need to get a new pot since one of the old knobs doesn't want to come off... the screw is stuck or something - weird. I managed to rip the pole out of the pot and the knob is still stuck on there. I've been trying to track down a 1M audio taper pot all morning. I felt like somebody was going to throw some of the illegal pot my direction before I would be able to find one. But it looks like I managed to track a set of them down.
Going to order some pickups and get the whole thing in running shape when I come back from visiting the parents.
Thanks everybody! Should be fun!
