All the youtube videos make it sound AWFUL. I can't wait.

I had a DF1 a few years ago and it did sound very DS1-ish but I thought it sounded a little bit better. I bought it as Adam from Swervedriver had one, the feedbacker was fun but a little bit useless.

I snapped up a used MXR Badass Distortion over the weekend, I had a bit of money in my paypal account and it's my birthday tomorrow so I treated myself. I'll let you know what I think once it's arrived and i've had a go.

I found out tonight.

Prognosis: 99.9% crap across all dials, with a setting accounting for 0.01% yeilding the tone I'm after that may not actually exist.

I'm having a ball with this pedal. I've been able to dial in the sound I once loved and it's giving the most perfect slightly glitchy, dry, compressed low gain drive that does wonders for chord work. The string separation is really great but I think objectively it's actually quite a shit tone; it literally sucks all the bottom end out and forces your sound down one range but it still sounds good to me. It definitely has a Santiago vibe - think "Bone Machine" and other Surfer Rosa tones and you're in the right area, though he probably used it for something completely different.

Shortscale, if you're nostalging about shit Boss distortion pedals you should go buy one. It's fun.

Slightly retract what I said about the MZ-2, it's not too bad on it's own as long as you (or I) stay away form the 2 chorus settings.

It's just when you add into the chain an insane pedal like my MBM pedal (the dinosaur one) it seems a bit flat and lifeless again, then again any dirt pedal would.

If I remember correctly Santiago used this in combination with a Marshall Guv'Nor MK I. Probably in the loop of the Guv'Nor so they could both be on with one click.

I've just used my DS-2 after quite a while of neglecting it, and it really is fairly useable. Old Japanese Black label too.

After this discussion I decided to buy an MXR Badass Distortion and I really like it. I know that I have said this like a million times before many times and then sold the pedal in question, but in this case I don't see myself selling this on anytime soon. It's a bit of a long story but i've actually ended up with 2 of these and I have decided to keep both of them and use them for different levels of drive.

I'm using these as my rhythm distortion sound. What I really like is that they do not have a really thick sound, I wouldn't say the sound was thin - just not thick. In my ears this means that they retain transparency and clarity and a good amount of top end, which I like. They have a very wide range of gain on offer and also a wide range of tones too, it can go from a dull sound to a very trebly sound but has plenty of good sounding options in between. I quite often find with OD/Drive pedal sthat they only have one sound which i like and i tend to stick with it, however with these pedals i've found myself tinkering with them a lot and i've found a whole number of sounds that I like - hence my reason for keeping 2.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, at the end of the day it is just a modded DS1 - but I like it.
