Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster

I only say that because there are a number of diminutive front girls in Korean bands that have no issue with a Jazzo, and would think that the shape (more than the size itself) can be comfy to fit most players, albeit the overall length being quite long in the Fender family.


This horrible-sounding Korean indie band I saw on TV for example (imagine if Falco had produced the Clash before he passed) has a 5'3" lead singer who does quite fine with a vintage Jazzmaster. And what a looker! (Jazzmaster, not the singer)

you have to hang it down low like that though, if you like your guitars more at belly level or higher for better neck access, the jazzmasters I have played are really bulky and uncomfortable.

I'd still try this guitar out though. it looks pretty cool.

Yeah I wear my guitars high because I like to jump about the neck. I know there's a certain malnourished and boyish charm about a small person wielding a big guitar, but I just don't like the feel of slugging it around; it roots me down too much. I'm a firm believer that guitars match certain people and looks but I don't really "feel" this one. Big guitars on small people:

Women = sexy
Men = emasculating

My Batwing is the biggest guitar I've ever played. It's long and bulky. And it looks great on me. I'm not very big, but friends have become so accustomed to seeing it on me that when I was with some guys in Sound Control a few years back and I picked up a Les Paul they thought it looked like a half-size guitar. But that's a Les Paul. It's sort of supposed to look like that. And they're hardly light in spite of their fairly slight profile. Unless you're an actual midget or people are accustomed to seeing much smaller/larger instruments around your neck I doubt anybody is going to look at you and be all "LOLDWARF!"

I'm gonna sound like a total NOOB here but since I've never owned a Jazzy and only had one tele that didn't really count because it was a Squier Standard with ceramic pickups that I later swapped out for a lace in the bridge....

What are the differences between Jazzmaster and Tele...in terms of tone, resonance, overall sound. Are they similar in any ways? I've been a bit jealous of my friends' teles, primarily for the glossy neck pickup sound and utilitarian versatility, but on the other hand there's a lot of music I like that was made with Jazzmasters, I've always thought they were beautiful guitars but were never "pure jazzmaster" enough at a reasonable price for me.. This Mascis Jazzy seems like the one if I was to ever get a Jazzmaster.

I agree. Thom Yorke is probably the only small guy that can pull the look off IMO...and maybe Prince.

I'd say the Jazzmaster has less bite and sustain/resonance. More mellow and rounded if that makes sense?
That tremolo system and bridge is the main factor and imo a TOM makes very little difference. Tele strings resonate through the body were as with Jazzys/Jags you get a subtle harmonic jangle from behind the bridge.

The tremolo setup has some effect definitely, but after having an angled Strat pickup in mine, I can certainly vouch for the pickup and placement having a more major impact on the sound.

Right...this is why I've given up on modding guitars and only buy guitars I like the sound and feel of out of the box.

Obviously, the angle of the bridge pickup is a massive factor. There's a lot of cork sniffing about saddles on the bridge etc. I swapped the bridge on my American Tele for aesthetics to more traditional looking one. I didn't A/B the two, and maybe I could have, but the difference is pretty subtle to be honest. Sometimes wish I'd bought a piezo bridge instead - a far more worthwhile mod!


On the subject of this Jazzmaster... very hard to resist at the rumoured price!
