bass pickup and bridge covers query.

I'm contemplating putting some on my P-bass copy and wondered if anyone had any experience with them, my strings are through body so respringing shouldn't be any bother, what I really wanna know is if having the cover over the pickup affects it in anyway, I already kind of know it won't but still, even if it did, it probably wouldn't be noticeable through dirt.

Does it? And Is it really annoying?

It gives a huge metallic ping to the sound, akin to a giant metal cockend being flicked by a mobile crane.

Or it gives a toppier sound, the way maple-capped chrome knobs do on Nic Huber guitars.

It makes the sound "less warm" and gives a more "bell-like" tone to the pickups.

It makes flamenco bass much harder to execute accurately.

What I'm trying to say is "maybe".

If it does this I want it.

Basses without covers sound like "where's the car??" whereas basses with covers are more like "where's the car??"

Les Paul forum responses to pickup cover thread
I have a matched pair of Seymour Duncan 59's uncovered in mine, sounds better accousticaly, than it did before.
Just depends on the cover, really. I've heard that epiphone covers are kind of like blankets on the pups, more so than covers from other makers.
Maybe I'm tone-deaf, but PIO caps and making sure your strings are fresh make more difference in my experience.

You can forget muting strings if playing with a pick. They don't seem worth it for me. It would fuck up the dynamic of my playing.

Just keep the beat asshole
Had them on my Jazz bass because they look tits, took them off when I started seriously playing bass because they are annoying. id say the covers are a "near as makes no difference" situation in terms of sound.

It stops right-at-the-bridge muting, but you can still mute further up. There are different levels to muting depending where you do it, but if you desperately need to be able to mute right at the bridge then either don't put the plate on or try and somehow remove a bit of metal around the front edge, preferably with garden shears creating a fucked, jagged edge that will cut your hand into meat strips, allowing your blood to soak into the strings, thus putting more "soul" and "feeling" into your music.
