I say Mustang for sound and feel, but Jag's are just the sexiest guitars ever made.

I have 2 Mustangs, a Jag and a Jagstang.

Unfortunately, the Jagstang doesn't seem to take any good bits from either guitar, and has a wank humbucker. But the neck is to die for.

A lot of people feel that way, especially with the MIJ / CIJ Mustang pups... I really like the AY's in my Duo Sonic, but even the stock pups in my '71 Compstang sound good to me.

what are AY's?

i played it this morning at church and it sounded pretty good, very mellow.

It's kind of weird, my experiences with shortscales have been hit or miss (am I in the wrong place? haha)
but over the past couple years I've learned to really love them. They've become a staple for recording, but haven't yet replaced my jazzmasters on the live front. Everytime I've tried to play it at a show, somehow the lighting gets so dim, or the venue is so dark that I have trouble managing the fretboard without taking a peek here and then.

I've been through Jags like spinal tap had drummers...jag HH special was the first. I actually sold one. bought another. sold that too. got myself an MIJ jag, that I completely upgraded with all AVRI parts & Antiquity II's, which was cool but had some weird grounding issues that I couldn't deal with. (turns out previous owner tried to drill a hole from the control route to the trem, but broke a drill bit into the body! And lastly I now have my keeper which is an AVRI jag, and is an awesome recording beast, but hella heavy! Not so keen on the stock pickups but haven't gotten around to swapping them yet. I love it enough, and have had it set up every which way possible, using different string gauges and shims, mustang bridge, and finally I got a buzz-stop and it did wonders for just that guitar.

The mustang on the other hand was instant love. just feels so great. sounds awesome stock. the neck profile is perfect, and the sustain that the jag lacks stock is there. The mustang is a pain in the arse to set up but thanks to you guys I found the link to mad-mike's set up guide. I started off with a 64 stang which played fast as hell but open chords were a no go on that A neck. 64 reissue that I have now is ACES.

I love both but if I could only keep one, I'd probably take the 'stang.

Perfectly set up Jaguar > Perfectly set up mustang

Anything other than "perfect", mustang wins. Jags are so fucking finicky, mustangs are more like a strat or a tele (to a lesser extent) where they just kind of work. Except for the tremolo.

But that's just my opinion.

Abagail Ybarra hand wound pickups - she's been at Fender since the 50s, and works in the Custom Shop now.

Nah, Jags for me! I've played Mustangs, and thought to myself, "hmmm pretty nice," but I don't like the dinky bodies. Jags, with their larger bodies, suit my playing style better (I hang guitars up high like jazz players), since they provide me a better armrest.

Ellen - who just got a heretical Jaguar (a Blacktop Jagaur HH - hey, I like metal tones, and I needed a replacement for my old '66 Reissue)

i prefer the jag's shapes and tones, but i got nothing against mustangs. i think the idea that teh kurdtz "ruined" jags (or even mustangs for that matter) is pretty weak considering he simply did to his guitars what a lot of people had done before him. and as for the proliferation of these guitars in recent times, first, i have to admit i have softened my opinion about the blacktop jags. while i would still never own one, nor do i look at them and immediately see "JAG!" in my brain, fender casting a wider net to drum up more interest in something other than strats and teles is a good thing. if they would only market them more aggressively and add in some lefty models, too, a lot of my complaints about fmic would be addressed nicely.

im 6 foot 2...i wish the mustang bodies were a little bigger but they are nice and light weight.....the necks are slightly thinner than a jaguar.....but the jaguar is a bit heavier but better balanced in weight in my opinion....i like simplicity so i found a japanese mustang without the gross switches that are placed where a strummer can knuckle them .....it has a toggle where the tone knob would be.....ive played jaguar but bought a vista jagmaster because i like the simplicity and its the same body and neck with simple electronics.....i like both but i play the jagmaster much more now because its banged up and feels great that way!

I own both.

Most of the time I play the Stang. I like the neck a lot, this is probably the subconscious reason why I play it all the time.

I play the Stang when I'm rocking out: Big Muff, Tube Screamer, Crybaby, divebombs

I play the Jaguar when I'm mellow: Chorus, Flanger, Delay, Reverb.

I noticed this when I thought about the thread title, it's not a choice I made on purpose.

Youd be surprised, i used to think mustangs looked small on me too but after overhearing a few opinions nobody seemed to think that way.

if the squier is vintage mod quality, and is anything like the vintage mod p bass i owned in terms of finish and playability, it should be pretty good. my p bass was better than mexican fenders.

Sell me your mustang then if your jaguar is so good .. .. .. ...

I usually reach for the Jaguar at home just because it's more comfortable sitting down. the upper horn rests on my chest and theres just more guitar to lean on.

I played the fender one at ludlow guitars the other day through an ancient amp that kept cutting out-- so I am not 100% sure about the pup but the neck was so easy and fun to play.

gotta try out the squier version and decide between new squier and used fender
