On paper they sound like the DR Pure Blues that I use. Maybe I'll give them a try sometime, but I'm a creature of habit and will probably still feel that the DRs are better whether or not I can tell the differencecleo wrote:
The next time I go shopping I'm gonna get me some Ernie Ball Classic Pure Nickel (Ernie Ball EB2251)
What brand strings do you use for electric?

Had a couple of repeated bad experiences with D'Addario (strings just kept on breaking on me), so I switched to GHS all the way. No problems since. I'd like to experiment with different strings, but by the time I get to the store, I allways go "ah fuck it, Imma get those GHS's".

Other things like leaving your guitars in a decent place when not being played, lemon-oiling your rosewood fretboards and cleaning your mapple 'boards and just washing your hands before and after playing can be just as good for your strings if you're plowing through them.

I always change what strings I use, depends on the guitar. I use D'addario 11's on my solid body though thats been fairly steady.
My acoustic has Elixir Polywebs, I've had the same set on for about 4 months and they still sound good - I usually change strings every 3-4 weeks.
I'm giving Optima Gold strings a go at the moment on my thinline archtop. They feel and respond a lot like bronze acoustic strings but are for electric, they're quite nice don't know how long they last yet though.
I'll probably be using some other make of strings soon though, I can never make up my mind.

Ignorant. It's mineral oil and nothing to do with cooking oil. A stick of that and my strings stay good for months, it's not greasy and is almost completely odourless. But haters gonna hate.brainfur wrote:fastfret is nasty and stinky-- just eat some fried chicken before playing if you really want some greasy shit on your fretboard
I used to hate fast fret for quite a while, but it just turned out I was using too much. If you apply it sparingly and use a better clothe than the one it comes with it works really well for cleaning the strings. I only use it every so often but it does help the strings last a couple of weeks longer.George wrote:Ignorant. It's mineral oil and nothing to do with cooking oil. Aye, used to dutifully buy Ernie Balls for years when I first started playing like a good Total Guitar reader should. After a while I decided to try a few different guages and makes, and I was at that stage where I was actually sort of improving pretty quickly. As soon as I tried D'addarios I stopped snapping strings. Like night and day. Ernie Balls are just fucking wank.
I don't use D'addarios at all now though. I think they were on the list of companies that donated to the campaign in California along with Danelectro. Anyway, I just like GHS and Rotosounds better. Rotosounds are CHEAP, too.
