Painting thread.

Since I've frequented this neck of the woods I thought that the projects section has been by far the best out of any forum I've been on previous to this. However there is always a lot of painting related questions that have been asked in a lot of threads here by veterans and newcomers alike. So I though: "we should have a thread for this shizz" in the vein of the techniques and practise thread or hotrods Jagmaster thread. So here we are, share and share alike and maybe this can get stickied.

I'll get the ball rollin':

Sanding, this seemed pretty comprehensive.

Projectguitar.com came up with the good shit again; Heatgun striping.

A blog on striping with chemicals, covers a lot of ground so deserves a mention.

So thats a bit of stripping material ( oo-er said the Vicar etc. etc.). I'm hoping that some advice on painting techniques and brands and retailers of paint both sides of the pond, plus some sagely advice from you bunch of Mavericks could get this thread hopping.

Read Reranch 101 and then buy nitro from Manchester. Unless you want some wild color from Montana, you are probably better off starting with paint that has been used on instruments for 75 years and has a large knowledge base. Nitro is the most forgiving paint I have worked with. You can stop and start for months at a time and when you come back your paint will melt together into a single coat.

Trying to sand a finish off completely landed me in the emergency room with both eyes swollen shut. And the edges on the guitar weren't crisp.

Trying to strip poly with chemicals was a joke, even stuck it all in a trash bag to trap the fumes. It's impossible.

The heat gun is the best method on poly... just finish it off with some light sanding. I use chemicals for non-poly finishes cause it wipes off in minutes.
