Stagg Pro Patch leads

Post by NickS »

Well, someone had to take the plunge. They describe the plugs as being by Ningbo Neutrik, but it says Yongsheng on the plastic lid and the cable clamp is the usual pair of metal fingers. Nice cast base with the plastic lid retained by what looks like a Neutrik compression clamp screw but ain't. I wanted some 10 cm leads and these fit the bill but I don't know I'd buy them again at £15. They'll last OK on a pedal board but I wouldn't trust them in the wild, as it were.

edited for poor eyesight - it's "Yongsheng" not "Vongsheng"

the jacks are massive on them, I really need to invest in some smaller patch leads. I'm currently rocking a mixture of standard basic moulded plastic and these from Maplin.

I use Venom Adders. They're easy to resolder to a small length for tidiness if necessary

Does the jack itself contribute much to the sound or is it just a matter of durability?

I ask because I recently got some cables custom made with Neutrik jacks and Sommer The Spirit cable. They sound excellent and seem very tough, and I think were well worth the price.*

However if I were to get similarly spec'd patch cables for my pedalboard, the difference between using Neutrik jacks and say, THESE FLAT ONES would be pretty huge, also the heavy Neutrik ones would take up more space on the board. If there is no difference in sound between the two, and durability isn't needed on a planned and set board, then surely the cheap ones make far more sense? I'd be tempted to get the same guy who made my cables to make me patch cables with quality cable, but cheap jacks.

There's no sound difference, but those pancake jacks are notoriously unreliable and crappy. I would go Neutrik all the way.

My amp to board and guitar to board are hotrox made cables with Neutrik jacks. Love em.

Ditto, HAET moulded jacks. Adders, plus some tidy little, right-angled Marshall demo pedalboard patchleads I picked up at the shop in Bognor for a song.

That's what I should have bought, but they didn't come up in my Googling for patch cables. £12.98 plus postage for a pack of 5 at Musiccentraluk.com (URL deceased - 2013)

The provenance of these other connectors is curious. Neutrik say they have a manufacturing facility in Ningbo, China. Ningbo Neutrik say they've used the brand name Yongsheng for 30 years and these products include NY in the part number.

I was using the banjo connectors for their low profile, but they're just too unreliable they way I was using them.
