Old, like Fran and I.
HA!!! Glad to know there are some fellow "old" dudes here instead of all of these "noobz"
We is all old, just some pretend not to be. Judging by your username I even have one extra year on you.
Oh yes, and Sonic before Nirvana of course. And Pixies before Doolittle!

Trompe le Monde is the best Pixies album.

Clearly false.

Doolittle has the goods on all the rest - you're clearly just trying to look cool (and failing).

Bossanova and Trompe are brilliant. I don't listen to Surfer Rosa that much.

I don't think Frank Black has ever played a Jazzmaster though.

Trompe Le Monde is a great album but I find the production on it really bizarre, it all sounds kind of muffled - still a great album either way. I love all the Pixies albums apart from Bossa Nova.

Oh man Surfa Rosa pisses on Trompe or Bossa. I'd probably rather listen to it than Doolittle too as long as it's got Come On Pilgrim tacked on the end. More punk. More me.

All of the records need a decent remastering.

Objectively, Doolittle's there best album. It's bullshit trying to deny that.

Subjectively, everyone's welcome to choose what they want, cause all 4 are brilliant (as is the first half or so of the B-sides).

For me:
Doolittle>Surfer Rosa/Come on Pilgrim>Trompe le Monde> Bossanova

I think. Would be different if you asked me tomorrow.

Much like they were children of my own, I try to love them all equally.

But you always love your firstborn the most: Surfer Rosa, with Doolittle just millimeters behind.

this all makes me chuckle, its like the name your favourite Beatle. Does it matter? No. They are all great and they stopped when they should of. What I think is great about the Pixies is that they aren't even trying to write new stuff as they know they can't match the past and it would disappoint so many people if they did. I wish a lot of other bands would take a leaf out of their book when they reform for the $$$$

I'm guessing you're new to objectivity?

I fucked up my their there. I'm probably newer to it than you purely by age, but in what way's that contradicting the definition of objectivity?

'Objectivity - 1. The state of being objective, just, unbiased and not influenced by emotions or personal prejudices'.

That's the kinda point I was trying to get across. Subjectively, anyone can pick any album; and since they're all brilliant, any one of the four is a fair answer. Objectively, without any bias or rose tinted specs, Doolittle's the obvious answer. But it's art, so it's all subjective I guess.

I'm off to listen to some Pixies now after reading this. Probably Surfer.

You made a (strongly) subjective opinion about something (unless there are scientific ways of testing for a best album that I'm not aware of) under a flag of supposed objectivity.

Anyhow, enjoy Surfer, it's the best one.

nevermind>doolittle>surfer>trompe>bossanova..

Jus' kidding. Doolittle is my fave, maybe partly because of the time in my life it coincided with and it was like one of my fave John Peel bands had matured into something genius from the flashes of brilliance on Surfer. One of them moments you feel like saying "told you so" even 10 seconds into the album. Oh, you got a free Pixies carrier bag with the vinyl album too. Back in the day..
Still, it is undeniably their classic album.

BUT, brilliant as D is, the run from Break My Body to River Euphrates is like being strapped to a jet engine with the throttle on full and bolts falling off. If you're saturated by familiarity, go and crank the album to shattering volume, shut your eyes and hang on.
Doolittle touches that on individual tracks (Tame, Hey!, Gouge Away) but nothing like that sequence for me.
Those MFSL remasters are sensational too, alive and breathing in the room with you.

There's complete pop genius all over Doolittle which is why I love it.

Surfer Rosa has it's fair share of immense songs but there's definitely stuff I'm less keen on because I'm a wimp.

Pop genius is a definite win for Doolittle. When it's in the player it's the best album, for sure. Doolittle is the band at the peak of its game but Rosa sounds like scared kids opening a box of terrifying power.

Definitely! Whilst still keeping alternative music integrity, not an easy thing to do.

I dont like the production on Surfer, i know Albini supposed to be god and all that but i think it lets the album down. I think the b-side River Euphrates version (off Gigantic) is way better than the album version.
