Actual progress. I have several neck prospects, including a Maple fretboard Mustang neck, damaged neck and a 1964 A profile Mustang neck. Not sure If I would get along with an A Profile neck but I have never tried one either.

I ordered all the rest of the missing parts for the Mulletstang except the tuners since I don't know which neck I have yet.

The maple Mustang neck on ebay was way too rich for me. It went for $376!!! I know they are rare, but that was over $100 more than my max bid. I have 2 more neck prospects still to check on and hopefully we can get moving forward.

Got the pickguard screws, Mustang control plate and wiring kit from guitar parts resource today as well.

Ebay was a total bust last night. Everything was going for too much. I really need a Mustang neck and tuners to finish the Mulletstang.

Help me, Shortscale! You're my only hope! (to avoid purchasing a too expensive RI neck)

I scored a Squier Jaguar neck last week for cheaps. It's nicely built. If you can score one cheap, then I'd say go for that and maybe upgrade in the future.

Totally agree though the availability on ebay has diminished lately. I got a 72 MM neck for Musicmaster for $125.

Unless your dead set on a fender neck, I'd recommend Guitar Mill for a good short scale neck.

I could easily pickup an Allparts neck, nitro tint and place the Mustang decal, but for parts guitars I typically like to stick with all-ready finished necks from Fender. I plan on doing the Allparts route when I get to the Jag-stang.

I found an 1964 A profile neck on CL, but the seller is extremely slow to contact me back. Not sure I want an A profile, but I would rather try local first if possible. Probably end up buying a 65 RI neck at this rate.

There's a guy on Offset selling a great looking allparts neck with tuners, he's dropped the price to $150 shipped. If you buy it and the tuners are surplus to requirements let me know ;)

Quick question:

Are Mustang thimbles the same as Jaguar/Jazzmaster thimbles that hold up the bridge? I ordered Mustang thimbles and the package says Jag/Jazz on it.

I think so. Some vintage ones have longer thimbles/bridge posts. You should be fine with a modern replacement.

The thimble holes were too small so I enlarged them with a 3/8" drill bit in the drill press.

I tried to slip my CIJ Jaguar neck onto the body, but it doesn't fit. I could remove the neck on my Musicmaster since they are both 70's Mustang style guitars.

Are Mustang neck heels typically smaller than Jaguar neck heels?

My 1960 duo body fits with my 77 musicmaster neck perfectly. Actually best heel body fit i've ever seen.. However i did try my 65 mustang neck on there and it was too big for the neck pocket. We're talking a couple of mm but it would have needed sanded a to get it on there. I guess it just depend what size they were year to year. I had always assumed they'd al have been interchangable. The modern stuff might be even more different. i think i recall someone saying that the japanese mustang ri has quite a big heel.

My 1978 music master has a smaller pocket but I have a 1972 Musicmaster neck so it actually has more space. It's less than 1/8". I may wait for the final neck before sanding the neck pocket.

Of course it's now available since I just bought a neck for the Mullet-stang :(

That is pricey but all his stuff his because he charges a premium for everything. I will keep it under my hat and maybe I could buy it later.

A little teaser for the Mullet-stang.Thanks to Stratonuclear for the sweet Bro Deal on the Bronco neck. I need to route some more room for the pots, drill the screw holes, wire it up and she will be done.

Maybe I should call it Mullet Bro-stang III because of the neck I found for it.

Jealous of that Bronco neck! I would have liked a real Bronco neck for my project.

Looking good though.
