pine is catching on. the 50s classic vibe (blonde and butterscotch) are both made from pine. A lot of people complain about how soft the wood is but from what I can tell is it REALLY depends on the piece of wood. Some pine is too soft to build guitar out of and others are more than suitable.
*disclaimer, I don't REALLY know what I'm talking about, I'm just listing an opinion I heard from someone else

That said, it is a very resinous wood, and needs to be aged for a long time to avoid resin/sap oozing out of the wood of the finished product.
