glitchy/weirdo pedals

Post by rich »

yo folks. i'm trying to find some weird pedals for weird guitar sounds... like when a fuzz goes way off the deep end or your laptop meets the microwave. the more fucked, the better. i've never ventured too far out of od/delay land when it comes to pedals, but i'm trying to take it into the unknown. got a lot of recording to do and i think a take of something interesting here and there will be way better than 3 guitar tracks all playing the same thing. suggestions? youtube demos? i don't even know where to start. thanks!

Subdecay Proteus. Amazing pedal, can't stop playing with it.

dwarfcraft has so much stuff. what's squeals the loudest and glitches the fuckest out? that proteus seems cool. i especially like the last setting in the demo. the blue box is cool and all, but i don't think an octave is what i need. one of my favorite tones comes out of my battery-powered orange amp when the battery is almost dead... if that helps. this thing looks kind of neat:

The Great Destroyer is my glitchy-est. The Shiva can do some of that too, but it's a more familiar/organic kind of sound.

just watching a great destroyer demo no youtube right now and it's awesome! i can't believe how much you can get out of those few knobs. i think i'm gonna try and pick one up once i recover from the recent musicmaster purchase.

i see you're in eau claire, too. do you happen to know the deyarmond edison/megafaun/etc dudes? i love those guys.

subdecay has some really cool synth and filter stuff.
But if you want something with dirt go dwarfcraft. TGD is awesome. The shiva is more predictable, and does some cool noises, but has a dirt pedal isn't has much fun has TGD.

Midfi clarinot is also pretty sweet imo.

There are probably some better sounding videos out there but i think it gives you the right idea. I had a clone of one for a minute, i loved playing pinch harmonics through it to make my guitar sound like a cat. All the glitchyness is based on how heavy or light you're strumming yr strings, i know that there is a specific term for this but it's escaping me (a player's attack?).

looks like all things are coming up the great destroyer. it's on my list. that clarinot is doing some killer shit in the end of that video. i'm gonna have to look into one of those, too.

aen, nice! i haven't seen justin in a long ass time, but i always love running into the other guys. we used to be next door neighbors, and brad and i used to hang pretty regularly. what did brad do on your band's record? he's doing some laptop stuff opening for the field in raleigh tonight, and i'd loooove to go, but i've got to play another show in another city. oh, and i just remembered that brad and phil recorded my old band's 7". small world.

Yeah, it is crazy, but I hear raleigh is a great music town.

Soda Meiser w/ Chaos switch.

Stacking fuzzes can be really good. I love the Pod HD500 for this. You could probably get a second hand M9 for not much more than some of the Boutique fuzzes, so if you don't mind Digital shit it's an idea.

OH FUCK DIDNT SEE YOU WERE ON HERE.

*edit*
But a good idea. Synth Mangler has 2 Soda Meisers. However, they are not reliable. Sometimes they just hiss, sometimes they scream and chirp and fart. In the same setting.

would the great destroyer kit be a good idea for somebody who has never built a pedal and isn't 100-percent comfortable with a soldering iron?

Ring modulator? I can recommend the EHX Frequency Analyzer, though mine's an old one, new ones probably sound exactly the same. I wish there was an expression pedal out on the frequency control so I could modulate it as on the Snarling Dogs Mold Spore.
