I was involved in that conversation. IIRC, what was said (yes, supposedly by J) is that they were waiting to see how the white one did, and that there could be a purple one in a few months. It wasn't a sure thing. The post is still up on HC if you'd like to go look for it.Lucamo wrote:If you read the HC thread entirely, some guy claims to have spoke to J himself.
J told the dude that a purple variant of the Squier was on the way out in a few months. How much of that is true I cannot say, but that idea excites me greatly.
In the meantime, while you're waiting on the purple, you might be able to find some more (review early peek) info on the white one over here.

but now everyone will hold off buying the white one in favour of the mooted purple one, which will never get made, because the white one didn't sell well and... and ... Yeah, I really wish I had a AVRI and CP Jazzy sitting here so I could measure the pickguards and trem plates to see if they're interchangeable. The basic layout of the holes looks about right, but without doing the actual measurements, I can make no guarantees. Sorry.mrperson wrote:I really need to stop looking at this guitar because the more I see of it the more I want one.
Also looks like you could fit a proper trem with lock which is interesting.
Not my picture, but it does show the J Mascis Squier side by side with an AVRI - again, the pickguard screws look to be in the "right" spots, although I can't guarantee that.

The review is officially "done" now - I just got some last minute details added and a few little corrections made here and there. Squier's had a chance to look it over and confirm I didn't get anything factually wrong (I always have companies check the facts - good or bad, the subjective opinions are my own and not subject to editing), and it's officially "done" now. And as far as I know, it's the first full-length review of the model anywhere.
I've added info on the pots (typical Jazzmaster values), the pickups (AlNiCo III magnets, 8.2K neck, 8.34K bridge) and some other stuff. Oh, and as far as a purple one, when I asked Squier about it, I was told by their press / PR / marketing folks that it was "the first they'd heard about it" - IOW, my sources at Fender / Squier said there are no plans to release a purple one in a few months that they know of - and they'd probably know if there was.

Excellent and very informative review! All the gut shots are extremely appreciated. It looks like it's got pretty quality parts through and through. As I see it, the only thing I might change is the tailpiece and maybe pickups, but the tailpiece seems fine and the pickups, of course I'd have to try them before I swap them.
In particular, I am extremely interested in these pickups. They seem like P90 pickups to me. I'm glad that they're trying something different with these pickups, instead of just making a cheap version of something that exists.
