Gator GBUS 8 power cable

Post by Freddy V-C »

Currently I power my pedal board with a Gator GBUS 8 power supply. The power supply is working fine, but I'm currently unable to use it because the actual power cable that plugs into the wall has ripped. I went and asked the technicians at uni, and they basically said it was too badly damaged to be soldered back together, and even if they could I wouldn't be allowed to use it in the studios at uni because it wouldn't pass a PAT test. It's an 18v 'Ktec' AC adaptor. I've searched Google and Ebay with every keyword I can think of, and nowhere seems to sell a replacement. I can find various other AC adaptors but none seem to have the right power tip.

Any ideas? I really don't want to have to buy a whole new power supply.

Not like this?

This shows a standard figure-of-8 mains lead to the PSU.

Nope, not like that. I guess that must be a newer (and much more sensible) version of the power supply.

I still haven't been able to find a replacement for this, I even know the model number now, KSAFE1800150W1UK. Does anybody know a way I could perhaps order a replacement direct from Gator? It isn't on their website...

If I end up having to buy a whole new power supply, I can't afford another Gator one. Is there anyone with any experience of this?

you should check out the new Diago Power station micro power 9. It powers up to about 6 effects... and costs about £36 with the daisy chain (sold separately)

If you're interested, I have one of these you can have for cheap with the single power cables.

btw: do you need anything other than 9v centre negative power ? How many pedals do you have ?

I have 8 pedals and they're all the standard 9v Boss-style plug.

freddy try emailing johnny shred freak and asking them. he is great at letting you know if he stocks anything and his prices are great. his version of the diagio power supply is brilliant. also, harley benton are doing some really cheap power brick style adapters as well which I think are a copy of the fuel tank or something. I will try and dig out the link

edit: this one http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_powerplant.htm but I don't think its isolated

The Diago above is a newer model, but the one he was selling for something daft like £50 a while back is exactly the same as the £12(?) Johnnyshredfreak PSU.

Does the Gator have 18v outputs and do you need them? If you don't need them and it ends up being a bit daft trying to get hold of the replacement part you need the Johnnyshredfreak PSU is great. Although you might want to buy an additional daisy chain with angled plugs as I'm sure it comes with straight plugs, which annoys the fuck out of me. You can get cheap ones from Danelectro, usually on eBay cheaps.

I have a Diago Powerstation but the cable split on it, the Diago guy told me that is was my fault because I should have it attached to my pedal board. I bought a Johnny Shredfreak as so far no issue at all, i'll probably buy a spare though. Don't buy Diago, buy JSF.

Yes, the Johnny Shredfreak PSU is great. No noise and it's cheap.

On the other hand, don't go for this rubbish:

I bought one recently for debugging power filters in pedals as it's the NOISIEST PSU EVER!

In case it helps anyone, the power tip looks like this:

There's no way I'm fixing the current one, it looks like this:

If I end up just getting a whole new PSU, is this the one I want? Can it safely power 8 pedals? The longest daisy chain on their site only powers a maximum of 7.

That's the badger. I connect 2 daisy chains to mine and have had no issues. You could either do that or trawl the internet to see if any other companies make a daisy chain with 8 jacks.

If you stripped back the strain-relief on the adaptor to expose the two wires, I don't see why you couldn't fix that. Hell, I could do it for you if you CAME TO LONDON TO SEE THE FASHODA/CASA SHOW IN 2 WEEKS

The techy guys at uni said even if I got it fixed I wouldn't be able to use it at the studios because it wouldn't pass a PAT test! :(

The hell is a PAT test? And why can't something pass it if wires have been resoldered? That sounds really stupid to me.

Oh, farts. I guess just buy a new one then, but keep hold of that one to fix and use away from uni. Spread the load, innit.
