Dang. I took a look at it and you can't even read the serial number. They refinished right over the thing. Too bad.

Nope. maybe 1200 or something around there in this economy (don;t get me wrong some idiot will probably pay that though).

Looks like it has replaced pups as well and no guard

Front pup looks like duncan designed which is a crap pup compared to a 70's gibson pup.

Non refin and with original pups maybe 1800-2K

Refin (even if professional) and changed pups 1200 I'd say. MAybe 1500 if it really plays nice and you really like the color, has original pups/guard/case/etc.

Didnt those 70's gibsons have maple necks and volutes? I've always wanted one of those for the extra neck stability.

yeah the 70's stuff had volutes, not sure about the maple. i also think they didn't do one piece bodies either they were two pieces stuck together. a friend of mine had a 70's lp standard i think, i didn't really like it.

Some Norlin era LPs had maple necks, not all... those were specific years, I'm not sure exactly when. The general consensus is that they're the worst Les Paul Standards/Customs Gibson ever made, but some are actually pretty nice... it was very hit/miss. The worst offenders had up to 5-piece maple tops as well as 3-piece body slabs.

That thing is ugly as fuck. Whoever refinished it needs a kick in the tits.

I do really like that color, but I've been unable to find any other LP with that color scheme... which makes me think it was refinished that way.

I talked him down to $1200, but it doesn't have a case and I'll definitely be replacing the pups. I've been wanting an LP custom for awhile and new ones are friggin ridiculous. This is the cheapest I've found anywhere and it plays really well.
Is there something about 1977 LPs that make them less appealing than other years?

Some are good, some are awful (like 70s strats) The only ones I've played fell into the bad category, the weighed a ton too. If it plays well and you like it then you're onto a winner. The refin/no serial def kills off most of the resale value tho. If it's a keeper you have nothing to worry about.

as long as you can see the serial number so you can verify it is not a fake, it is probably worth 1200. If you could find a pair of PAF's or soemthing that would go a long way to restoring it's value. If you are planningon keeping it for along time then put whatever pups you want and rock the fuck out with it. One comment I would make is that if the headstock is so covered in paint/finish that you can not see the serial number I would have 2 concerns..

A would be that it is not a fake

B would be that it has not had a headstock crack/repair and the heavy finish was doen to cover that up more.

That said, any older genuine Les Paul with no headstock repairs and that is in playing condition is probably "worth" the 1200 he is asking.

He probably removed it because he thought I was buying it. He kept coming back with offers and I said no. He seems a bit too desperate to sell it, which could mean it's a fake, stolen... or he really needs weed money. Regardless, it seemed too fishy to me and I bowed out.

And I didn't think it was ugly at all. He told me it was a black beauty the previous owner had repainted. Blasphemy, imo. I would love to see that type of blue burst on an official LP. Most LP colors look like shit to me... pretty much everything but the black beauty and the silverburst. This is one of the first I really liked. Oh well, not to be I s'pose.
