how do you fix a reverb tank?

Post by Josh »

my ol' peavey studio's reverb hasn't worked in a long time. and everything in the tank itself looks fine. so would the problem lie in the chassis? or something stupid like a footswitch?

or is it borked and I shouldn't waste my time and get a reverb pedal?

Could be any of them. I replaced a reverb tank in my amp and working out what you need to do is a pain if it's an uncommon model.

First I'd try a different footswitch if you can do it for free (from a friend maybe?)and if that doesn't work have a look inside the chassis to see if a wire has come loose. I doubt it would be anything on the PCB itself though. check the RCA leads etc and they're the right way round.

If you need a replacement you can have some fun picking a new one. You need to work out the resistance and which end is grounded etc but once you have that you can get bigger, longer or tighter reverb tanks to choose from. I put the same tank you get in a Hot Rod Deluxe (which is the same as a Twin tank save for it being driven by an op amp) and the improvement was immense over the stock short one.

As for reverb pedal or not I like it in my amp and I really dig the traditional spring sound. If you have an FX loop you're okay but I'm not keen on driving an amp (or using high gain) with reverb before it.

this thing is wired straight to the chassis/tank. no RCA leads. hoping it's down to a footswitch since I don't have one of those.
