THIS sounds intriguing. The strings go THRU the pickup. I pulled the image out of their source code, so maybe it won't allow remote links.

Early '50s Fender Non-Pedal Lap Steel Guitar Pickup - Deluxe / Dual Professional
This is a trapezoid-shaped box-car pickup from an early '50s D6 Fender Dual Professional. The same pickups were used on Fender's Deluxe lap steel, and if they made any six-string versions of the triple-necked Custom lap steels, then they also used these pickups. The strings on these models go through the center of the pickups.

This is also true of the Supro lap (Coodercaster/Jason Lollar) and (of course) the Rickenbacker 'horseshoe" pickups...
