I didn't even catch that at first. The Sonic Blue and Fiesta Red color schemes on RI's are based on faded colors? Never knew that, but surprised I didn't put it together before. That kinda makes me think that RI color schemes are one step away from this whole "relic-ing" fad.
Huh you're right. I still prefer Fiesta, though. Dakota is a very boring color for me. It's one of the reasons I sold my '65 RI in Dakota Red. It's probably the best playing guitar I've ever played, and I sold it because Daphne Blue looked better.

Whaaa? I mean I love Daphne Blue as well, especially as a UCLA alum.
But... sold the best playing guitar you've ever played? In hindsight, do you regret it?

No, because it's not like it was 50 times better than any other guitar I've played. It was marginally better at best. All the '65 RIs I've played are at that excellent level of excellent.

Eh? Fiesta red and sonic blue are individual colours in their own right and always were. They're nothing to do with fading or yellowing daphne/dakota.

granted I will say that my mid 90's mustang in Sonic Blue, as it was really yellowed when I picked it up almost looked daphne blue.
Well, my candy apple red jaguar got covered in poop when an angry monkey took exception to it at the safari park, but it's still candy apple red. It just looks brown. Same thing.

precisely what i was going to say.
Well dammit. I'd read that long ago and it sounded plausible since that's what the colors ended up looking like, but I just looked it up and it looks like Dupont was offering Fiesta Red back in '56.
Original colors up to 69 was Dakota, OlyWhite, Daphne. That made the information that the other colors were faded/yellowed versions since they weren't originally available colors, and appeared to be faded/yellowed versions of the above three.
I stand corrected.

yeah, MMs duos and mustangs came in those colours from '64-'69, but they were always separate. dakota red doesn't tend to change all that much when it yellows, whereas oly white will turn cream and daphne blue will usually go green.
Stewart, thanks for the info. Do you happen to know what colors were offered 1970-79 for Fender's student line? I believe they introduced black and red wine in the 70s...
