Not really... it wasn't her guitar to begin with actually.

If an Avril Lavigne guitar costs 3x as much as it should, I want my $93 single humbucker Telecaster, thanks. And my $126 non-Mascis Squier Jazzmaster to go with that, thanks.

Seriously, Mascis has done us all a huge fucking favor by pressuring Fender to release an affordable Jazzmaster that's somewhat vintage accurate and you're calling him a major dick for it? Some people just can't win.
Freddy V-C wrote:I generally don't mind either way, as long as the artist's name isn't visible in ENOURMOUS letters. A nice guitar is a nice guitar, and frankly I think that Mikey Way bass is gorgeous-looking, regardless of how terrible MCR are.
Les Paul's signature is rather large on that guitar and none of us seem to mind. :)
That's a pretty deluded way of thinking, if you don't mind me saying. FMIC exploited the higher price point market with the Fender Mascis Jazzy then figured they could still make a bundle (possibly even a bigger bundle) by bumping out a Squier version for the folks that couldn't afford the Fender. You may have benefitted from this, - if the Squier JM is a good guitar - but for goodness' sake don't try to paint J Mascis as some kind of Robin Hood figure, tussling with The Man to bring affordable guitars to The Kids. FMIC make guitars to make money, and all these rock stars help them do that, and get an ego massage and some free stuff at the same time.
Cue: howls of outrage...

Hmm, sonicboom, did you know that corporations exist to create revenue for their owners?

Gosh, really?
Do you mean that FMIC exist to make money for their owners/shareholders, and the Lavignes and Costellos and Mascises of this world present a fairly important bit of leverage in helping them achieve that in a certain market i.e. J Mascis on the headstock makes Fender more money.?
I just don't believe it.

Is your point that it's bad for fender to make money? for Mascis to make money? For them to combine efforts to make money?
Even if the result is a new nifty product?

Given that I've read so many accounts of people who have gotten their first "real" Jazzmaster this holiday season thanks to the Squier J. Mascis Jazzmaster, I'm really having trouble seeing the downside here.

Haha,I am waiting for a Fender Elliot Randall sig strat

ImageImage

Eliot is famous for his studio work with Steely Dan and many others

Elliot's strat is a '63 Sunburst strat he bought used in 1965 for $175. The neck got broken because he had it in a gigbag and somebody dropped a trunk on it so he ordered a replacement neck from Fender and they sent him a '65 neck. He painted the guitar silver sparkle(even over the decal on the headstock, oops!) and then stripped it to natural before he joined his first touring band "The Druids Of Stonehenge".

here are some videos of Elliot in 1968 playing the same strat

In 1969 he took it to Barney Kessel's guitar store in L.A. and had a Gibson Humbucker intalled in the neck. He latter had a DiMarzio stacked humbucker put in the middle position. The bridge is still the original sc.

I think it would be pretty cool to make a partscaster like that.

If nobody buys my pink strat I am going to make it into an Elliot Randall Tribute Strat

The intro riff alone rules. Mr Crowley rules as far as solos go. But....

I do get it, I really do. That's why I'm selling all my guitars and never buying another one, signature or not, because obviously I need to stick it to tha man.

These RR sound legit. I had a friend who had that exact same one.

I kinda want a PRS Mikael Akerfeldt. He used it on stage when I saw them for the Heritage tour. It seems like a legit instrument and pretty affordable for a PRS but it seems pretty standard except for the coloring/art and maybe the SE HFS and SE Vintage Bass pups. Sounds good when he plays it.

I really like this. Jeff Waters from Annihilator Sig Flying V. I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to mod an existing V to get this setup though.
A little too red though.

Maybe the black?

yeah, black looks a bit better.
