If the tuners work who cares if the back of them are rusty?

If they don't move well because of the rust you should replace them fo sho.

It's a matter of them operating smoothly. From the looks of those, with rust on both the pegs and on the backsides, something tells me the gearing is rusted as shit too.

This is a bit of a late update. I have put everything together but I am having a weird issue with this guitar. The guitar sounds off tune. I make sure its all tuned but playing chords they sound wrong.

Strangely if I put a capo on it plays ok...any suggestions on how to correct this?

Given you've replaced the nut and it sounds OK with a capo, I'd suggest the nut may need some adjustment.

Damn.. I would of just replaced the tuners and the nut. :/ There goes another one. I wonder how long it will be until there are no originals left. I guess in the end it makes the originals worth more.

More work for me down the road. What kind of spray paint--that's my question. You always want to do research before painting. But what's done is done. There's always a chance it will scrape right off. It's part of the story now.

You can find those plastic tuners all day on ebay, or buy some new Kluson copies and hold onto those just in case. I would also try steel wool and oil on the rust, or get some rust treatment stuff. I have a spray for cars that turns it into an iron oxide or some shit. It's miraculous.

You could also swap out the pickup for a mini hum if you want more bang--but hang onto that original too. A single pickup is like a silver bullet. You have to mean business with one pickup. If you ever sell, it's always best to be able to say it's original. You never know what other guitar will cross your path.
