music master ´63 almost done

Post by jamba72 »

I always liked the 50/60ies pre-Mustang forms a bit more than the 60ies Mustang form, but didnt like that mostly Mustangs or DS are made of poplar or basswood. (ash I dont know) I found poplar just too soft.
There are some very few ( early 60ies) made of mahogany of course..
The body is made from a template from Cooterfinger and a nice, one-piece sapele from Addaminsane ( many thanks again guys 8) ), Squier Jaguar neck, Duo Sonic bridge, Stratocaster bridge and neck pickups, 2x 500 kOhm Push Pull Potis ( unsoldered for humbuckers at the moment )..
I have a hotrail bridge HB, too, and will try it together with different splitting options with a tele switch.
.. this simple Duo Sonic bridge is much better than the Wilkinson Tele with brass compensated saddles..no buzz.
But,...Wow.. this baby sings and has a nice twang, with the hotrail you can get good Metal sounds, too. I´m more of the humbucker guy, but playing 2 Les Paul Junior DCs with P90s I´m surprised how much power these have.

the hardest thing was to do a custom pickguard, because the bridge position is a bit narrower to the 1st PU due to the 24 inch neck scale. seriously, the pickguard form alone was another reason to do this guitar..;) I love it..
the finish is just 2 coats of yellow stain and 4 layers of acrylic spray can laquer, a good one, that takes only minutes to dry and sink into the wood.
..have too wetsand and polish it when the finish is hard enough..

thanks.. 8)
..I had a brass nut left from my old Gordon Smith GS2 which has the same width than a Strat nut, had to sand it to fit, sounds G.R.E.A.T..
the rosewood has a nice ´flame´, too..not bad for a Squier..just had too do a littul fret job.
and new tuners of course, the jaguars are super shite.

thanks, man....body-through? hm, I wanted to do it quite original, though it could sound better..

the brass nut isn´t perfect yet, action is too high on the low strings, even on the 1st fret..the original jaguar plastic nut is strange, kinda curved, on the high strings higher than on the lower strings..is that normal??
I´ve seen this before on strats..
the string spacing is slightly wider than the jaguar nut, too, but ok.

well, I thought the MiM DS´s bodies are a bit thinner and of alder, one of the few ( with Cyclones) that are actually of alder. I´d like to play one of these.. 8)
the Toronado bridge has the strat saddles and is body-through? Pickups I´m trying right now, I have an artec hotrail and a cheap strat middle PU.
The problem is the wiring, with a Tele switch I can get 3 PU positions at last, but with the hot rails splitted, in the middle position I get an out-of-phase sound together with the neck..
You have a normal 3way toggle, can you post a photo of the wiring, that would be interesting..
