"Allan's Resolve" (rock instrumental)

http://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/bb10-allans-resolve

this is the last song off my newly minted album, "The Time is Magic"

this was inspired by allan holdsworth, and his 'resolve' to stay true to his guns, and make his music without compromise.
i knicked one lick (from an old UK song) and snuck it in there, just for pure plagairistic purposes.
:)

another engineer, in DFW, captured the drum performance by Brent Dacus, really talented drummer that does gig stew out there....
i had an old demo sent out, one i had recorded on my old trusty roland VS-880ex

engineer then sent me the drum tracks, and i played along with those, building the track up from scratch.

USACG custom strat #2

i had just built this strat, and this is the 2nd thing i recorded with it.
used it for all the parts, just to see how far i could stretch tones on one instrument.

all guitars thru a '81 mesa mark2b head, into a Avatar 1x12 with celestion heritage g12H-55.
various mics on different parts, i had sm57's, adk hamburg, at4033, and shure ksm44...
running into a A Designs Audio MP-1 mic pre, into a dbx compressor, into a soundcard, mixed in sonar.

Can't comment on something we can't view.

How do you get that effect on the vocals? The really thick sound?

Pens

are you talking about the 'Walked Away' tune?

the lead vocal, i sang twice, and just mixed the 2nd take a bit underneath the 1st one.
since they don't line up exactly the same, it fattens it up real nice.
if you listen closely, there are certain words in certain lines, where i take the 2nd lead vox out, and you can clearly hear the one line.

plus, there's lots of 2 and 3 part harmonies going off and on throughout.

there are no fx on the vox, except some EQ and compression.

Hmm okay. I've tried the "sing twice" trick on my own tracks but it tends to just come out sounding echo-y.

YEP, you've gotta really be on it, as accurate as you can be, so every note and inflection try to line up right on top of each other.

i'll roll a bit of the top end off the '2nd' lead vox, and that helps with any sibilence issues.

i've been recording lead vox off and on this way for at least 20 years.
