guitarists who use bass cabs, 10"s 12"s 15"s whatever with a guitar top..
when i still had my ampeg blue rocket, tho it was solid state, i liked how it sounded with guitar, more than a guitar solid state amp. but not like a valve guitar amp..so i think maybe it was just because of the speaker (it was 15" tho.. big diff with 10"..) so much more muffly..i liked that sort of. maybe just the fact a guitar doesn't push bass speakers the way it pushes guitar speakers...while most people love pushed guitar speakers..
the reason i paired a guitar top with bass cab was originally because of lack of guitar cab..sort of like an 'in the meantime' thing..but i started to get used to it.
i want to find more about this.
don't know much about his setup but my friend says josh homme uses a bass cab, i said i didn't think so, it's guitar cabs ..but i don't know really.
simon of comanechi splits his guitar sound to a hiwatt and a trace elliot, but that's two separate amps, not a guitar top combined with speakers intended for bass frequencies.
so anyone know of any examples ?

I kinda stand in the same aisle as you. I have always run a pair if 15" cabs with a sovtek head until a few years ago and I went to an Ampeg Micro vr with a 112 cab with a Celestion Truvox speaker in it. I also have Celestion Truvox speakers in my Marshall 212 with an Acoustic B200 freshly perched on top. The truvox speakers are lower end celestions designed for "sound reinforcement". They hit a nice range between guitar and bass speakers.
cool ! you have any recordings of those combinations ? band tunes ?
i'm just so curious to find out if maybe i've heard it before on records but i just didn't know what they used, there must be more guitarists who have a thing for that !
i hear these things people saying 'yeah but the speakers are made for different frequencies, they are not getting what they are made for, doesn't it sound dull ?'
my top is 'only' 30w, valve, but i used to use the cab with a bass top with much more output, i don't think it's fair to compare, it does sound unusual compared to have the top combined with a 212 guitar cab like i've done before..but i missed that typical sound from the bass cab. somehow.
if i had money to throw away i'd LOVE to experiment with 15", 12" bass cabs combined with 10"..it cannot possibly disappoint..but that's serious investment and i don't have the money or space for it..just now how it is it works fine.
princeton reverbs have a 10" speaker in it no ? i remember playing through one, though it's a speaker made for guitar freq..i always loved its sound too..it's a bit weird..is it about the specific 10" sound..the 'under-pushed' bass speakers..wonder what exactly it is.
just wish i could check some records with combinations like that to compare.

Buzzo used to always use a bass cab, a Sunn 2x15.johnnyseven wrote:I think I saw a video of Buzz from the Melvins showing off his gear and I think he was using bass cabs.
He's also used a Sunn Beta Bass as a guitar amp when his Beta Lead was unavailable in the past.

I used to use a 1970s Simms-Watts PA100 head through a Marshall 15" cab. 100 watts of clean valve power, sounded amazing, I ran it alongside a Roland Bolt combo set crunchy with reverb maxed and EQ'd for more high mids and highs. I ran these as each side of stereo delay and tremolo and got an immense sound, awesome with fuzz. The bass cab seemed to me to fill out the bottom end and give it some punch whereas the guitar amp maintained clarity and cut through. I now use a '70s Traynor YGM 3 in place of the Simms-Watts but it isn't the same, I may try this with my Ashdown bass amps when I get them back home.

The guitars on these tunes are recorded circa 1999 or 2k by my band and I, guitars thru a sovtek mig 50 and a pair of fender 15's.kim wrote:cool ! you have any recordings of those combinations ? band tunes ?
