it's just a phase
i've been a total fu manchu fangirl again lately...
so now i've been looking at mxr phase 100's..quasar, maxon, small stone, moon phase, polyphase..
seems the phase 100 would be a good option for phase mainly used on overdrive and distorted sounds..to get that 'driving' kind of sound that rides on top of riffage...
you say ?
oh and off topic...i scored my fulltone ultimate octave back... for only €100 ! and it's on its way to me together with a red witch famulus which i scored cheap too... yessss. awesome seller.

it's not for straightaway..i've spent too much on gear the past few weeks. xD
which gives me more time to compare different brands and models for a while and make up my mind.
i have an old digitech xp200 which does modulation like flangers, phasers, chorus, trem etc.. but it's fucking huge and needs its own power..

what didn't you like about the phase 100 ? there's script logo mxr 90's and bolt logo mxr 90's...i've no fucking idea, i'm not looking to blow 200/300 on a phaser, just need something simple and just 'classic'. ..oh and small. i'm familiar with the volume drop on ehx but it's said the nano's don't have it. mainly looking for a stoner rock driven kind of phasing no funky 70's guitar phasing/flangering.
Putin? Gorbachov? Yeltsin? Mike Matthews? Surely a secondhand one can't be feeding any of these greedy fascists....
Just heard a phase 90 once and thought it sounded great - perhaps a little more transparent than a SS. The phase 100 has more poles, it also has a depth control. I personally like the idea of a fixed depth - having to work within the limits of the equipment. The SS just has a switch but I guess it could be pretty easily modded to take a pot? That's coming from someone with almost no knowledge of electronics though.

I've got the script phase 90 and I think it's really nice. I had the nano small stone at the same time to A/B them and liked the MXR more. Strangely I like the big box Small Stone as the volume drop is useful if you want stuff to kick in when you switch off the phase.
There's a phase 90 that has had the script mod done for sale on the BKP forum at the moment for £55 + shipping.

I've used the Phase 90, Phase 100 and Small Stone a fair amount. I'm not entirely sure my reasoning for this, just my instinct when I here them but I generally prefer the 90 to the 100, seems a bit more subtle
Small Stone always wins it for me though, sounds amazing fuzzed up and a lot kinder on the wallet

see i'm not particularly after 'subtle' i want liquid sounding driven C tuning things.. but hmm...
the script one and regular one phase 90 show up regularly, new there's a price diff of 20/30 euros.. i should just go and test them..problem is..shops here, are rare, and stock boring gear, didn't even find those pedals ! total. shithole.

It had a tone which was a touch too trebly for my liking, it sounded slightly harsh on the ears. I was playing it after drive though so I don't know if putting before drive would sound any better. When I got the custom shop script Phase 90 it sounded loads better, lovely smooth lush phasing and not harsh at all. I did find it a bit overpowering for my purposes though so sold it on and now I have the custom shop script Phase 45 and it's great - I drilled a whole in the side though so I could power using a power supply as I kept leaving it on with a battery in and it was pissing me off.kim wrote:what didn't you like about the phase 100 ? there's script logo mxr 90's and bolt logo mxr 90's...i've no fucking idea, i'm not looking to blow 200/300 on a phaser, just need something simple and just 'classic'. ..oh and small. i'm familiar with the volume drop on ehx but it's said the nano's don't have it. mainly looking for a stoner rock driven kind of phasing no funky 70's guitar phasing/flangering.

Boss PH-1 or PH-1R if you can find one. These almost never get mentioned when people recommend phasers, but they're both nice, thick-sounding funk machines. Having said that, a vintage Small Stone beats either if you can live with the huge enclosure.
At the cheaper end of the spectrum a Coron Phaser 50 makes a decent alternative to a Phase 90 and can usually be had for cheap when they come up on eBay.

Why not go for a Boss phaser?
I have the PH-3 and it does it thing (which, unfortnunately, wasn't my thing at all). It has an arpeggio-sounding mode called "Step" which is kinda novel, and it has a bunch of other modes (sweep up and down, etc.), as well as tap tempo and quite interactive knobs.
The reason as to why I hate it is simply because there is no subtlety to it. It phases the shit out of everything and when i stomp it my guitar turns into a malfunctioning space ship. If it would have had a blend knob on the other hand... Maybe...
I'm actually thinking of putting it in a feedback loop I'm about to build, but otherwise it's just laying in front of my amp, mocking me.
