Valve Junior

Post by Lucamo »

A friend offered to sell me his 1.5 year old Epiphone Valve Junior for 75 bucks.

Is it worth it? I only have a solidstate amp currently, and have never owned a tube amp. It may be a good way to introduce myself to the world of tubes.
Any opinions on the Valve junior?

Doesn't sound like a lot of money to me. Hard to see how you could go wrong for that.

I love mine, though it has been totally modded. Even at full price for a stock one they're a steal.

I've one at school. It's great. Takes pedals really well and can go from soft to loud with ease and sondz kool no matter what.

This +1. For the $ it's a great little amp.

i tried one of these, and thought it was terrible.

you can put all kinds of pedals in front of it, and make it go....

but honestly, to me, a Pignose battery operated amp sounds way cooler.

I had the combo for my first amp. Definitely worth picking up. My biggest critique would be that it is REALLY dark, almost muddy. New speaker + tubes help a lot. Wish I still had my for recording, got some great tones with a RAT going into a dimed VJ.

You are now required to do an Sloanz. It's part of the deal, but I'm sure you already know that.

Okay, I picked it up. It is nice... to look at.

BUT. I do not have a cab yet.

Do any of you have any suggestions for cabs. It can handle 4, 8 or 16 ohms... WTF does that mean or imply?

I means you could buy any cab with no regard for the ohmage. Just pickup a cheap 1x12 that will likely be 8 ohm.

damn, i forgot about all that!
it was a fun amp to mess around with, i ended up getting a free vintage 2x12 cab and sold it all together for PROFIT.

Is there anything to consider in the different Ohm rating or type of speakers?

sound-wise I mean.

not really. I have always felt 8ohms is easier to work with, since most amps can be run at 8.

Okay, so a dude offered me a homemade White cabinet (excited me cause I can paint it) with a Celestion seventy 80 in it.

Do you guys know anything about that speaker?

On some random boards I found through google search they have been shit talking it... are they just snobs?

I have never met what I would call a bad celestion..... Randall has been using these speakers forever in their cabs and amps..... so if that says anything they are alittle better for the heavies...

I also think the speaker that Egnater uses...The Elite 80.... is a take off this model..... I would be more concerned with the cab itself over what celestion is in it...speakers are replacable

I'd be more concerned with the cabinet than a Celestion, but hopefully it's well-made.
