How can you tell an AVRI tailpiece from a Japanese tailpiece when you are looking at it? Does it say CIJ/MIJ on the Japanese tailpiece?benecol wrote:The tuners that are on there will be identical internally to any repro Gotohs you buy unless you spend a fortune on TonePros ones. It will also make precisely zero difference (almost all tuning problems people blame on tuners are in fact down to the nut). Replacing the trem assembly is a far more worthwhile upgrade, although possibly a tricky one (Fender seem to be making it harder to get hold of AVRI trems).

Also, just had a thought. Will my Japanese trem arm fit an avri trem ?

How does the CP JM/Jag trem compare to the AVRI and Japanese Trems? I always wondered about their quality.
They are for sale on Angela and they have the threaded vibrato arms.

The CP trem has a screw-in arm that is just a teeny bit (fraction of an inch, IIRC) shorter than the AVRI arm. The Fender rep I spoke with about it told me there is no noticable difference in function between the two, and indeed I've found that to be the case. Except that, with a strat trem spring under the CP's screw-in arm, it stays where I put it, unlike the AVRI arm I had previously. The hardware quailty is indistinguishable, and they have the same dimensions.
FWIW the arm tips they come with are different shades, white vs. parchment, or whatever. I think.
I prefer the CP trem, because I like the arm to stay put and I can detect no difference whatsoever otherwise. There is now an aftermarket gizmo to hold the AVRI trem arms still, but it costs a lot more than a strat trem spring.
I don't know about CIJ trem, never played one.

Maybe I should buy to sell on hahaa...
And no, your Japanese arm won't fit.
I replaced my CP trem arm tip with a "Fender Original Strat Aged Trem Tip", Part #099-4933-000, so it would match my guitar's pickup covers. The tip does not seem to be quite as tight a fit as the original, but it stays on the arm, it seems to fit well enough to me.serfx wrote:that reminds me, i lost the tip cover for my cp jag trem.. and none of the replacement tip covers i've ordered have ever fit.. nor does the cover from a mim/mij arm.. tis very strange.
YMMV.
same thing happened to me too. D: makes me sad. used a pen cap as a tip for a while but it just wasn't the same.serfx wrote:that reminds me, i lost the tip cover for my cp jag trem.. and none of the replacement tip covers i've ordered have ever fit.. nor does the cover from a mim/mij arm.. tis very strange.
Ok thanks, ordered that too now...benecol wrote:Urban Myth'd.othomas2 wrote:So I did call Fender today, they had 4 in stock, well.... now 3 because I've ordered one with staff discount.benecol wrote:Also, be interested to hear what Fender say about those trems; might well be an internet rumour that's gathered pace.![]()
