Classic Vibe Thinline or Vintage Modified Thinline?

(First things first: I'm new here, but I've stalked the forums pretty intently the last year. So, moving on.)

I'm about to buy a new guitar. A hollow-body Telecaster, no doubt. But I'm not wearing the money pants as of lately, so my budget is quite limited; I'm thinking no more than 400â‚¬.

The alternatives so far are the Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster Thinline

and the Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Thinline

I'm more into the last one, the Vintage Modified, since it has a short scale and a nicer color. Unfortunately I have only been able to try out the first one, and I really liked it (despite the very glossy headstock).
How do they compare tonally, and what are your general thoughts on these two? Does the Vintage one has as glossy a headstock as the Classic Vibe one?

Any input is appreciated.

I tried the VM Thinline and it didn't have a glossy neck from what I remember. It's also heavier than the CV.

The VM has a 24.75 scale. The neck is satin, and the pickups aren't very good. But once you add some oil to the neck and swap out the pickups, it's a great guitar.

the VM also has a 7.25 radius. That is the deal maker for me.

I really disliked the VM thinline, but the CV is lovely. The price difference is worth it, the CV is in a whole different league the VM.

What pickups do you recommend? I was thinking of getting a "deeper" sound with this guitar since I already own a standard Telecaster and that has been doing its job so far (I'm playing rythm guitar in some sort of shoegaze/pop/experimental band). With this guitar purchase I hope to cover a grittier sound spectra. Maybe not as deep and gritty as an Epiphone Dot (I will always be in love with Fender twanginess

), but somewhere there in between.

Welcome!

Personally I've never been 100% satisfied with VM's (quality-wise) but never felt up a CV that I didn't want. Granted I haven't had my paws on all of VM's so there's bound to be a perfect one somewhere. An 'Excalibur' if you will. CV's feel like an much more expensive instrument. Personally I do not like the finish on the CV thinline, but I guess that's just me. I have the 60's CV Tele which I love. I switched the neck pup for a SD 59' humbucker, which was a good thing. I guess a p90 (in a HB size) would do the trick?

BTW where exactly in Sweden do you come from?

That's not a good sign. It seems I'll have to buy one to try one... As I said before, I fucking hate the glossy neck and headstock of the CV Thinline (are all CS's so glossy?), not to mention how glossy the body is, so everything is pointing me to the VM... Yeah, changing the pickups won't be too much of a hassle (I have built some pedals), but which ones will fit etc.? Humbucker, you suggest, but I have the suspicion that they would be too "gainy". What about the P90's sell me on those, if you have the time

CVs are all about the glossy-glossy. If using a humbucker, I'd recommend something more vintage (i.e. not-so-hot). From what I've gathered from the savvy folks here, P90's are something between a single coil a la Tele/Strat and a humbucker. A best of both worlds. Personally I'd recommend trying different guitars with different pickups before purchasing one. Still, I'd reckon the VM tele I linked here would fit the bill, so to say.

I was thinking about this as well. I like p-90's and think they sound better on mahogony or with a set neck or both. After thinking about it I am decided between this and the jim adkins sig telecaster.

The Adkins one is pretty sweet. Matching headstock=love. And according to the Fender site it pretty much seems that the Modern Player Thinline is identical to the Adkins model. Is that the case?

Anyone who has any experience with the Adkins Tele?

edit: Fuck me, it's a shortscale. Instabuy? What about the pickups?

The are some differences:

classic player has fender designed p-90 while the adkins has Duncan pickups (might change these to lollars if i get it)
classic player has a bolt on maple neck while the adkins has set in mahogany neck
classic player has a heel on the neck and the adkins has this heel trimed/shaved for better upper fret access
classic player has a mahogony body while the adkins has an ash body
classic player has a through body strat bridge while the adkins is hardtailed with a tune o matic bridge
classic player is 25.5 scale length while adkins is 24.75.
I think the classic player is made in china and the adkins model is made in indonesia
And of of course the price.

I think the classic vibe thinline tele looks awful with that brown body. I played 3, soundwise one was really ok and one was outright awesome. didn't plug the 3rd one in.

So, if you look for a light, easy to handle guitar and a typical Tele sound with maybe some airyness and even a bit more brilliance in it, this is the one. but from what you write where you wanna go I'd think the Thinline CV just isn't what brings you closer to that when you have a good Tele already.

It's hit or miss, I guess, with the looks.

Yeah, that's kinda what I got out of this. The CV Thinline sure sounds good but it just doesn't look right. At least not in my hands. The Modern Player Thinline will probably be the one I'll go with. P-90s seems to be the pickups for the sound I'm going for.

Then I'll have my FABOLOUS Standard Tele for cleanliness and another one for DIRT stuff.
