As far as better tone control most of the "good stuff" is bunched up at one end of the spectrum. A TS usually has a 25k pot. Dropping that value to a 2 or 5k helps a ton. From there is has clipping options, one side of the 3 way is 914 diodes, lift in mid position, and combo Ge and green led in the last position.

I let the enclosure "cook" a bit too long. The other one of the same pattern came out like this.

I'll have to remember that about the tone control, had no idea! The Ge/led combo sounds interesting too.

Just to be more anal, the TS has a 20kG pot for the tone control. Other taper pots are going to bunch up a lot more.
