That's actually a decent price...

Really? It's a glorified parts guitar, albeit a well painted and wired one. The relicing I'm sure many would prefer wasn't there, but that's a taste issue.

What isn't down to taste is that Parts Guitars are always worth more parted out, and less than the sum of their parts assembled. I'm sure a lot people respect his work on offset so he might get a sale, but on ebay noone at all would bid.

seems like a lot of effort to turn around and sell it.

I think he just loves working on them. I kind of understand, i buy projects for the challenge, then when they are finished and play well i loose interest. I have'nt kept many at all, but they are not projects on this scale.
Looks great.

I think fair play to him, I reckon Fran's right, that he's just doing it for the sake of doing it. Having said that, Mike's rigth too, in that it's still a parts guitar and that's pretty steep, like.

Godd job, though.

I know he does it for the love of it, and I totally respect his passion and skill/attention to detail, however I'm speaking from a Market perspective, and like it or not, a second hand CIJ Jazzmaster is worth more than this guitar.

He wants a bit less than $1000 for it, in the US a new CIJ on ebay goes for about that much, a used one for considerably less.

From a collectors perspective he's created a butchered parts axe, but from a player's perspective, it's still less than an AV and a bit more quality. Sure, relicing is stupid, but at least he did a good job, so it doesn't look stupid. I think I could see people paying that much for it, not collectors mind.

Sold with seemingly no quibbles about the price. No one in the 4 page offset classifieds thread once suggested the price was on the high side or tried to make an offer. In fact people often spoke about it as a great deal. I agree completely with Mike. If a no name user posted it there it would struggle to sell for $600, but with the reputation it goes for nearly a grand.

I said I would be unsurprised if it sold for that price on Offset, but that's the only place it would.

I suppose people there value his work enough to pay that much for it.

Although I disagree with some parts of it (such as filling in the allparts logo and signing a fender-esque pencil signature) his work is good enough that I'm looking forward to the next thread.

The price may be steep but i'm sure its worth more than a CIJ Jazzmaster, they go for about £300 - £350, I did get mine for £145 though.

It doesn't matter what you think as an individual. The market dictates prices, and a stock Fender CIJ instrument is worth more.

I agree with everything you said James, I enjoy the builds.

Given the choice between that & a stock CIJ for £300 i'd pick that one.

Yeah, and like I said, you're one guy.

Do some market research and get back to me about parts guitars vs. CIJ Fenders.

The documentation and the pictures probably didn't hurt much either ;)

Mike's right, his reputation for quality work helped to sell that guitar. I wouldn't pay that much for a parts guitar on Ebay, either. I would for Doug's, though.

Market price for a parts guitar like that would probably be around $500-$600 on Ebay. I'm certain it's a much better guitar than any CIJ, and the bound fretboard is a huge plus, but that's the way things work. Homebuilt just doesn't fetch the $$$.

You've surely seen his Shell Pink Jag project. That guitar was a piece of shit when he bought it, but he fixed 'er up really nicely. A nice guy and a hell of a craftsman.

I'm glad he was able to break even on the Partsmaster and provide a nice player for someone....Besides, this sale helped him pick up a '62 Jazzy that he's going to refin and restore, and I'm looking forward to it.
