A pickup change makes a Bronco better than a stock Mustang Bass and plays almost as well if not as well. I say amazing. Once I get the Schaller M4 tuners installed, I will have spent about $220 on that bass, and it can beat the pants off of any stock Mustang Bass in the world.

The stock tuners are pretty bad, I admit that, but on the other hand, the Bronco has far better weight balance than a Mustang because the tuners are so small.

The irony is that there are FAR more aftermarket pickup options for the Bronco than for the Mustang Bass (while keeping the stock route), and they are far cheaper too. This allows you to dial in exactly the tone you want. You can even go crazy with an active EMG single coil. With the Mustang Bass, your only options are vintage, Duncan Designed, Aero, and a custom rewind. That's pretty much it, unless you want to reroute, and if you do, your string spacing still limits you to rails pickups (unless you want to slant). You still have more tonal options with a straight up Strat route.

I bought a Mustang Bass because I wanted it. If I had any common sense, I really didn't need it and I probably will never be completely happy with its picked tone. I do plan on Tina Weymouth-ing it out at some point with a competition stripe and a neck pickup some day.

My Musical Kids

Post by creepingfur »

I'm relatively new to this board - but wanted to post a shot of my offsets - 2x 1974 Epiphone ET-270s and a MIM Fender Jaguar with Seymour Duncan Antiquity 2 pick-ups and vintange electronics with a pair of there offset cousins - my Jazzmaster and my Lee Ranaldo Jazzmaster (both on the far left). The ET-270s are one of my main performing instruments and I've grown really fond of them - though I don't use the trem.

... and if basses count..

This is my short scale Kramer 650B Aluminum back. The sustain is beyond epic thanks to the neck - and with a maple / walnut body - it's a daunting beast to play at 22lbs but worth it.

I love my Bronco Bass. As a guitarist, it's just what I needed to purely have the occasional mess around on bass.

There was an auction I was following on ebay for a Bronco Bass that Started at $0.01 and it ended before I could bid. I keep seeing those and was wondering if they were good. I am not a serious bass player and would like something to plug into my iRig to record some bass lines.

I really like it. It is very LOUD ( like gives my Flying V a run for it's money loud), simple, and the neck is amazing. It's not as sharp as a jazzmaster or jaguar - definitely a unique sound.

Come back after putting good strings, upgrading the tuners, and changing the pickup. If you still think it's not amazing, I don't know what more you want from a bass guitar.

My favorite strings are GHS Pressurewound for rounds (well, half) and LaBella Deep Talking for flats. both sound great.

Am I the only one who thinks the Bronco maple neck is much better than Musicmaster or Mustang necks?

Better than a maple Mustang neck?
I've had all three with rosewood fretboards and i think the Bronco is the thinnest, lovely neck, all of them.
