That's not true at all - the Baja has never been offered with anything but a maple neck and black or white single-ply guards. That's (at the very least east) a Baja with a different neck and guard.

incidentally, a 60's player came up on CL today for tree-fiddy. if i had it, i'd do it.

How many different versions of the Squier '51 were there? I was near certain there was just one run, but that quality was inconsistent throughout, so some guitars are very good, and a lot were awful.

Just one run of 51's.....Every one I played was pretty horrible.

Bingo . I have 2. Obvious differences in build quality. One was a 2005 and the other was a 2007 . The 2007 the wood is just shit . Took em both apart and it just showed . The older ones were just made better .



Don't know how people would say all 51s were horrible . Electrics kinda sucked like most other Squiers but if you change out the pickups and pots and they're great . Stock they're just blah.

Was it you who worked in GC and reckoned that 9/10 were rubbish? I think I remember hearing that somewhere, that there were so many different things that they seemed to get wrong on any given example, but there was the odd guitar that didn't have any of the faults and was great.

i always like the replacement guards that guitarfetish sold for the 51's, kinda make me sad i sold mine before i saw em.

Also, I remember when I bought mine, they'd just been discontinued so I got a good price on it. That was 2006, maybe? I'm near certain they stopped making them at some point in 2006.

I really don't think there was any difference between earlier and later ones, rather that the run was inconsistent.

I'm certain it was a 2 year run . Pretty sure it was 2006-2007. Could be wrong . There was a time you were able to get one for as low as $80 here in the US . Now they go for a bit more since they've gained some popularity with the collectors and hobbyists . Especially if they're stock ( which they're mostly modded by now , I've seen few bone stock ) . Why ? Cuz folks wanna mod with a clean canvas I reckon.


All I know is I had 2 . 1 later , one earlier . The later one the body wood was mealy and easy to strip screws . The older one has better body wood and actually a nicer maple neck . Just more solid .

Yea, I remember playing a bunch of 51's and a few were amazing, and most were garbage. It was usually things like sharp fret ends, and other quality control issues that could probably be fixed if you wanted to. But the ones that felt and looked great right out of the factory were well worth the money. The pickups weren't great, but I do remember when they were on sale for $79 at one point, you could grab one and some GFS pickups and have an amazing sounding guitar for under $150.

These three do everything I want.

Not all of the later ones are bad. I got one of the clearance ones from MF for $80 and its a little belter. Best cheap guitar I've ever played. That isn't to say there aren't certain issues with them but nearly all of them are fixable. The stock bridge is garbage - uses through body saddles on a top loading bridge and will "float" and hence buzz if adjusted too low. The ends of the height screws are sharp as all hell and will tear up your hand if you do a lot of palm muting. The body is made out of wet cardboard - you have to be really careful with the screws if you go modding - they'll strip if you look at them funny. Pickups are a matter of taste as always. I quite like the stock ones. The 51 definitely has a distinctive voice which is something you can't say for many cheapies. Only mod I've done apart from a setup and smoothing the sharp fret ends is a replacement bridge from GFS. I'll probably replace the pickguard one of these days. The stock one is pretty cheesy.

Yeah, it was me. Oddly enough when we had them new most of them were crap, but every time we got in a used one (often sold between $59.99 and $89.99 depending on condition, mods done etc) they were awesome. I'm guessing it's a combination of people either getting them set up after buying a dud, or the lot of the shitty ones ending up in the hands of kids and beginning guitarists who are so put off by the jagged frets and bad action that they gave up playing guitar all together.
