The new one's bodies surely aren't jag shaped or contoured correctly. The new ones are, infact, shit.
The necks aren't the same. They use those weird ass conversion necks, and it's way to chunky to be a Jag neck.
The original vista necks were 100% the same. They were just jaguar stock re-used. The new neck suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. I had my new jagmaster for a week before I sold the POS.
Oh okay, I've only played the later Jagmasters and the necks were nothing like my Jag. You're probably right on the Vista ones, though. The neck on my Vista Supersonic feels the same as my Jag except for the flatter radius.

No we're talking about vistas, here. necks are the same. bodies aren't the same.
Vista or otherwise, Jagmasters are not Jaguars.
I'd consider it a Jaguar.
From what I've heard the Vista Jagmasters were pretty much the same as the Supersonic, and as I own both a SS and a Jag, I would call the SS and Jagmaster, Jaguars.

so you're telling me you wouldn't feel a bit mislead if you saw an ad in the classifieds that said "1996 CIJ Jaguar - $400"
and then clicked on it and saw this:
I'd at least fire off a correction email, honnestly.

Had Fender called it a Jaguar Custom, or Jaguar Special? No. But as it stands that would be an incorrect ad.
I see no reason they couldn't have called it such, but they didn't.

Still nobody mentions sound.
The Jag has its own sound, like a Tele, a Strat or a Les Paul or whatever. Ask proggy or stewart why they are currently hunting down Jags- because they played Mike's and it sounds fucking great. The tremolo is smooth and there are plenty of tonal options.
The guitar is a classic. Leave it alone.

This. If Fender called it a "Squier Jaguar Modern Custom" and the ad listed it as such, then nope, would not be disappointed.

Some people would say the same about the Tele when the Tele Deluxe came out.

A tele deluxe sounds nothing like a tele. Yet is still a tele.

I don't think it's very important if Fender call it a Jaguar or not. It's not very Jaguar-like but them branding it as such makes it a Jaguar variant.

i dunno how true this statement is.
in my side by side compari, they're obviously two totally different guitars. different contours, different grains, different bursts, different routes. we're getting into nitpicks now, but a vista jagmaster is basically a jaguar. the one thing that pushes it over the edge of not-being, is the strat trem.
the necks are factually the same... dunno about the bodies.
The new one's bodies surely aren't jag shaped or contoured correctly. The new ones are, infact, shit.
vistas had the jaguar shape (with slightly different contours as hotrod's comparison has shown). the new ones are jazzmaster shaped. the only difference is the upper horn cutaway. and because the later ones were built for 25.5" scale they moved the bridge up, leaving an even more massive empty space below the bridge than before.
I think this new silver one would look awesome with a mint guard and no humby covers (or normal jag pickups!).
