for real, getting Jaguar. Am I a phoney for only having a Squier Jaguar?
Of course not. You're only home-made blocks and binding, real Fender hardware and a decal away from making it into a real Fender!

it's more phony to believe that what's on the headstock is what makes a guitar good.

What Eric and Mike said.
We are really spoilt for choice with Squier, its incredible. I will be picking one up this year, not sure which yet, i'm torn between the VM Tele Special, Duo Sonic and Jaguar at the moment.

You're about to be spoilt even more with 2 new VM Teles:

Basswood is like the lightest softest wood they make guitars out of.
But, Yeah, they will be heavy, the trem is like a pound by itself. The Jags will probably be heavier, all that metal hanging on them.

Is it lighter than agathis? Agathis is pretty dang light too.
EDIT - Finding some density numbers, they have fairly heavily overlapping density ranges, Basswood 300-600kg/m³, Agathis is somewhere around 435-540 kg/m³

Spoke to our Fender rep today regarding these. He knew nothing about them.
He phoned the office on my behalf but I had to nip out the shop. He believes these were an inside job to create hype before official release.

Basswood can vary.. It can be heavy and it also can be light .. If they cure it it'll be light . I doubt they will though.. Some people dog basswood .. They think it's cheap. Might be inexpensive but it's not cheap. IMO the finish can make of break the tone on a guitar sometimes . A thick urethane finish I think fucks them up.. A stain and a lacquer ? Try it . Play a guitar say a strat . Both alder . Play one with a Urethane and one with a nitrocellulose . I wish I can say basswood but finding a basswood made guitar that's common with a thin lacquer finish is hard .
Depending on the tone basswood you're looking for basswood with awesome..... Ok.. Play a poplar , an alder and a basswood Mustang .. Differences . Just depends what sound you're looking for ..
Only reason a lot of cheaper guitars are basswood is that it's easier to work with and harder to fuck up. Less waste , more product , more profit .
Even if they're basswood or not if they're priced right and decent quality I will buy and mod the fuck out of them . Nuff said ..
Call a company like Warmoth and tell them basswood is cheap shit .. They'll laugh at you.
It's a tone thing , not a price thing in my opinion.

Really don't care about wood, it's all about pickups. And weight doesn't bother me. I have chronic upper back and neck problems but y'know... I'm not a weedy woofter.

I don't care what they're made of, it's still a $300 jag with semi-interesting color choices.

EXACTLY.
I'm seriously thinking of selling my Jap Jag to get one. Crazy as it sounds. I can't justify having so many guitars around, particularly one I don't particularly want to mod any further.

Especially when you could sell it, but a squier and have some cash in your pocket. These things make way too much sense.

ALL THIS!
Its the same vibe as the Squier 51 evoked but even better, its a Fender classic that has been either too expensive or elusive for many years.
