so a powercut switches on tube amps will just turn off some of the output tubes right? So you can soak the output stage heavily and get nice tube distortion, but it's quieter?
And an attenuator just takes the signal before it hits the cab, and lowers it?
hmm, interesting this tube stuff.
yeh icey's amp will be a beast. But least he'll have the TONEZZ right. Personally i think it sounds a bit loud. Even my solid state amps can't be turned up past like 5. but good on him for having fun and giving us something to discuss.

You can build attenuators into amplifiers.
My 6100 has a power cut switch which halves the output by using 2 of the 4 tubes, it also has a Triode/Pentode switch which cuts out two of the terminals of the valves, halving the power again, so you can get 25/50/50/100 watt output.

how loud is it on 25W? and does using less tubes affect the tone??
I'm still looking to buy a Marshall DSL201 - one went on buy it now for £180 last week. sooo p#ssed off, missed it by 1 hour.

It's more about clean headroom- fer instance, the 15/7w switch on the Tiny Terror doesn't make it half as loud in 7w mode, but it results in more poweramp distortion at the same levels.

What he said.
Halving wattage is only a 3dB reduction in sound level, so 50W amps actually sound 90% as loud as 100W amps, however they breakup into power amp distortion earlier.
So for 7W read power amp saturation at lower volume.

icey's getting on my nerves
take some fucking lessons, learn to tune your fucking guitars, learn to fucking play and then buy a nice amp.
i can't believe this, it actually makes me feel sick.
rich little cunt.

Yeah i must admit a custom built amp for a begginer level guitar player is a bit excessive. but i guess its his money and all.

To each their own... Personally I think everyone should wait until they develop as a guitar player enough to decide exactly what they want to play before dropping too much money on any amp/guitar. You want solid quality, but not overly expensive. That way when you develop your "style" you can then drop the coin on what fits your style. It seems that guitar setup (although useable for other styles) is definitely geared towards the metal sound.
Again though... to each their own. Yes it seems like Icey needs to learn more...But so do I so that is a wrong reason for me to bitch about him...

I think when you've got a lot of disposable income and are REALLY into a hobby, it's very easy to spend a lot of cash on it.

Totally. I spend a fair bit on gear, as you guys have seen, and I'm fortunate enough to be able to do that.
And it's what I love, have been gigging regularly for over 10 years now, and I can't see myself ever changing.
I guess it's the same whatever you are passionate about - for instance I wouldn't spend thousands of pounds upgrading a Vauxhall Corsa, but the boy racers on Exmouth sea front would argue that it's worth the money to them...

but he earns the money himself. so he can do whatever he likes with it really. if a massive handmade amp makes him happy - then let him be happy.
and hell, i haven't heard any samples from him in months - maybe he got good!
