I'm guilty of having way too many guitars and buying too much equipment. but it's just a learning experience i guess.Nick wrote:Robroe, myself, Shad, Sloan, Aug, Timhulio, etc the list goes on and on. Sure there's periods of time between mass purchasing, and many things sold in the process, but there's quite a few avid collectors on here, which is to say to a degree that most people would consider a little overkill.
I think the only annoying thing about icey is that it doesnt sound like he actually plays all these cool guitars he's got. and guitars are made to be played, so it's a big waste. but now he insists he does, so maybe we're all wrong.
I'd love to hear a soundclip of how his playing is coming on.

Icey, notice how on the top guitar with the bolt on (yellow represents neck, red represents body), the two pieces of wood are bound together with two strong pieces of metal. When you play, the vibrations resonate through this, across the bolt indeed. But why are you stuck in the mind that sustain is somehow lost because of bolts being there? There's strong contact between the wood.
On a set neck, we have a layer of glue actually stuck between the two pieces of wood. This means minimum contact, and the absorbent substance that is glue is all there is for the vibrations to pass through. Using common sense here, surely you must agree that bolt ons must have more sustain? I know you can give me a hundred and one websites or links or whatever to prove me wrong, but from a scientific standpoint, can we at least consider why these set necks apparently have better sustain?
Malik, do you even know how guitars are built?
let me try to break this down for you. Wood has grain. at least unfinished wood that's going to be on the heel of a neck and the neck cavity. The glue will get into some of those grains that a bolt on won't quite do anything about. Also, no well built guitar is going to use a layer of glue THAT thick as it is in your diagram.
The neck route of a set-in guitar is not the same as a bolt on. It's usually designed as a smaller cavity, so both the heel and fretboard will make contact with the body of the guitar. On a transparent finished guitar do you even SEE the layer of glue?
Any way you look at it your diagram is false information
Go to a guitar center:
Pick up a tele, play for 5 minutes
Pick up a les paul, play for 5 minutes.
come back and tell me the tele has more sustain due to it being bolt on.
Personally I do prefer bolt on, and most people think I'm crazy for it. I don't like the wooly sustainy sound set and thru necks deliver. I also like being able to make adjustments in string angle by shimming the neck if I want. If you're not happy with the action or tension of a set neck guitar you're kinda stuck with it.

To illustrate my point:euan wrote:Aye, and bolt on neck cavities are totally different from the deep tenon neck cavities you get on a set neck Les Paul. There is more tighter contact with the body. A set neck doesn't sit on top of the guitar, its in it.

A bit extreme cos this is a long tenon joint, but it does show how different a set neck is from a bolt on. Notice that even though there is a cutaway the neck wood is still surrounded by the guitar body. Oh there is some more sustain there. It is also a deeper pocket than a bolt on and over all even in smaller tenons, there is an increased amount of body to neck contact.

That's not agreeing with malik, it's agreeing with me. Malik's the one saying Fenders have MORE sustain than set-necks.JJLipton wrote:I have to agree with malik here, sometimes you don't want a guitar that has lots of sustain. I think the bolt on neck design, lacking sustain or not is a huge part of the "fender" sound. Of course when it all comes down to it at the end of the day, just play the goddamn guitar.
Jeesh sometimes it's like I don't even exist.
