On your reco I'm thinking of trying one of these.
any thoughts?
12AX7/ECC83 Ei cryo Phono 12AX7/ECC83Eicryoph USD29.95
We have a limited supply of Ei Yugo ECC83/12AX7. The latest version is shipping with gray oxide coated plates. We test for microphonics and noise and match into pairs when you order in multiples of 2 tubes. Please USE THIS GRADE FOR PHONO GRADE OR VERY SENSITIVE LINE APPLICATIONS LIKE COMBO AMPS WHERE ULTRA LOW MICROPHONICS IS NEEDED. The Ei tubes are great in your guitar and hi fi amps, as they produce a naturally sweet tone that most find very pleasing.Nice detail too. Tubes priced per piece. CRYO TREATED GRADE.

Never heard of them. But go for it if you wish. That is bullshit about matching preamp valves into pairs. You want the quietest sweetest valve in V1 generally because everything goes through that gain stage.

Matched Preamp tubes? That's a new one on me. And it's complete shit. Like euan said, your lowest noise/microphony tube goes in V1. The rest you can play with and let your ears decide.
I don't even believe in matched Power Amp Quads. Pairs maybe, but even then it's not crucial as long as they're the same brand/model of tube.
A lot of it is bullshit to sell with.

I wonder, how well-matched are the two triodes in an individual 12AX7 or ECC83, typically?

Fairly well I think, although people will try to sell you a matched one for use in teh PI.
