Dismissing SRV as "white man's blues" is pretty ignorant and just shows that you never listened to him. Stuff like 'Lenny', his Hendrix covers, all of Texas flood are GIANT steps above some lawyer guy on youtube wanking around on the pentatonic.
I mean we all have our preferences and everything but your opinions seem sort of ignorant. I still think you never played a good TS
*all in good fun, don't take me too seriously... except that you really ought to at least give SRV a try
When you say "ignorant" you mean "correct". I don't like Tubescreamers or Stevie Ray Vaughan. I also hate Rory Gallagher, most of Hendrix's material, Vai, Malmsteen, Rhoades, Satriani and the like.
Nah man, it's one thing to say you just don't like it, and another to dismiss him entirely as some sort of hack. I also hate players like Vai, Satriani, etc. but I don't just dismiss them as "wankers". That's reserved for the wannabes that can't quite emulate them beyond playing locrian modes on pointy guitars really fast. But hey, no need to worry about. We all like different things.
Just out of curiosity, what is your ideal tone then? It's all taste, and we probably have very different opinions about what we like.
When did I say he was a hack? He's a White guy playing the blues. I hate that.
Everyone has personal taste - there's no need to get upset because mine doesn't match yours. I personally find that stuff all boring as sin.
And Vai and Satriana are clearly wankers.
Anyone playing instrumental "music" based around guitar fireworks is a twat in my opinion. I like songs.
I like lots of guitar sounds. I think using the term tone in that way is wank. It's one of my pet peeves.
Guitar sounds, guitar timbre, guitar tone, whatever. I think you knew what I meant...
Like, when you think of a clean guitar... is it a bright sparkly Fender single coil played through an amp, or is it a big fat round humbucker tone, perhaps with a little bit of dirt?
Or for overdrive/distortion, you clearly don't like a "boxy" mid sound, but somehow I doubt you also like scooped mids.
I play single coils these days (despite having bought that silly Flying V thing the other day), I prefer their snappy attack and dynamic response.
I like a nice spanky clean sound but I don't think you have to go to a Fender to get that. Both the Marshall JVM410H I used to have before running into financial troubles and my Marshall 6100 head both have excellent clean channels.
I like what you would call British Overdrive, Marshall JCM800-esque crunchy overdrive with a cutting upper midrange but not a boxy midhump like a Tubescreamer. I like thunky bass retention that doesn't overpower the bass player and a crisp top end.
I also like everything in between. I like Vox Amps, I like Orange Amps and I like Laney amps. I don't have much experience with HiWatts.
I don't like Mesa Single/Dual/Triple Rectifier Saturated Distortion. I don't like Fender amps that never break up, I like Deluxe Reverbs and Super Reverbs, or a low wattage Bassman.
I like a dirt sound that communicates back to me and is dynamic to my (mainly rhythm) playing, Tubescreamers are not what I like.
I see. Well in that case SRV is pretty much the opposite of what you prefer in a guitar sound. Mostly leads, clean Fender amp that are pushed by a TS, and a distinctly non-British voicing.
I basically dismiss out of hand anything that is overly long, without decent melody (vocally most importantly, and harmonies are a bonus) and has any form of extraneous guitar playing or overly long sections. I understand I am a song nazi, but if it doesn't grab me by the bollocks I just don't care.
eh, if by others guys' gear you mean ONE pedal he uses, sure. like i said, i liked the tones he was getting and im not trying to be chris walla. id have to buy a tiny terror, a 64 vibrolux, 2 dr z. 2x10 cabs, and one of those new vox semihollows.
plus, what player on the earth has a completely unique setup? everyone is copping tones from everyone. everything has already been done (musically that is).
so whatever.
rich people say fuck yeah hey hey

What's so bad about a white guy playing blues? Who plays the music doesn't have anything to do with the music itself or how authentic it is. Rock and Roll and Jazz are forms of "black man" music too... and guess what? Your a white dude playing rock.

I can't possibly be expected to address such a poorly conjugated piece of prose.

Get over it.
I was with you right up until Hendrix (and all the ones after, hactually). This is where you entered the wrongzone, though...

Apart from him, you're pretty much right, mind. Can we add that blind, dead fella to the list?

What, you hold Vai et al sacred to your heart? I feel sorry for you.
Hendrix is overrated. He had like 5 good songs, it's not my fault you haven't realised that yet.
Eh? No, you peck - they can all fuck off apart from Jimi (who did great pop singles, surprised you don't like him more). The picture's Jon Spencer, not Steve Vai, if that's what's causing confusion.
I know who it is, I was referring to your post. You said I entered wrongtown, you didn't mention me reaching city limits.
I hate Jon Spencer Blues Explosion too.
The Pop Singles ARE the 5 good songs. The rest is tish.
Crosstown Traffic
All Along The Watchtower
The Wind Cries Mary
Little Wing
Foxy Lady
is all I like really. I don't really understand the big shakes behind Voodoo Chile either, and Purple Haze is kind of alright.
I never sit down and thing "Yeah, I'm going to listen to Jimi Hendrix". I just don't care.
