I think one's picking style has more to do with effecting how the strings vibrate. I don't really think the pickups have that much to do with it. unless, perhaps, you like the way it sounds when you pick a particular way when using a particular pickup.

He's just using the pickups as a location reference.

Yea, I try and play in other places, but my hand is stuck in that position (begin the jokes)... But, truthfully, the tone does change depending on where you pick. Country artists like that twang, so they'll play closer to the bridge sometimes... Sometimes...

Tru Dat.
Would have been funny if you weren't known for belittling Mikes playing.

Depends what sound i want, i may softly strum over the end of the neck to keep it mellow or really dig in near the bridge for bite. Also find where the pinch harmonics are.

I don't pay attention to where I pick, I'm too busy rawking.

Blackmore and Malmstain always lowered their middle pup flat for this reason. The closeness of the strings to the body on Strats has always been a minor irritation to me.

for spacing I do a single nickel on the high side and double nickel on the low side and have eliminated that problem for myself

Ah, I thought you had shimmed the neck with said coins to overcome that problem.

And yeah, I've not had any probs hitting the pickup/s, I don't really have 'em all that high though.

Got a habit of creeping up the neck when using my thumb, try to avoid this when using a thumb pick as I'm worried about putting dings in the neck.

Incidentally, where you pick also determines how easy it is for you to tune a guitar, esp if using an electronic tuner.

If you pick right at the 12th fret, you get pretty much nothing but the fundamental -- and a stable movement of the tuner's tracking. Towards the bridge gets you more harmonics, which will make the tuner's needle go back and forth as it tries to differentiate the fundamental tone from the harmonics.

So make it easier on yourself and pick at the 12th when you're tuning!

When intonating and setting up a guitar, I use the neck pickup with the tone rolled down for the same reason.

Octave pedals track better because of this too. Too bad I never want to rock fat riffs on the neck pickup :/

Neck pickup + Distortion = not good.
