I hate the Daddy-O, not to argue, but i found the controls lacking quite a bit.
I dig the Box of Rocks
I dig the Muff and the TS808 (and the like) - they're really popular, too.
I love what tube amps do, though, a little more than pedals.

The daddy-o is definetly a "love or hate" kinda pedal. I like it tho, it's good for the price and Tom Petty's guitarist uses one
On another note, I don't understand the big muff, it just sounds too insane and crazy for me. I wanna see how it sounds with the sustain all the way down tho......probably shitty, but i like that slight dirty/fuzzy sound.

For cheap distortion the new mod tone green distortion pedal is actually really good.

If we're talking amps, I really like the OD channel on my solid state Princeton Chorus. Sounds like ass above 5, but there's a definite sweet spot that has great sustain, dynamics, and crunch.

That's Vintage Rat & Turbo Rat 2in1 but modified; Turbo has less gain and more volume - so it's a crunchy overdrive;
And in Vintage mode is replica of an early Rat (large box version) with lm308;

I also dig MXR Dist+ very much. The Dunlop reissue isn't quite as good as an old one, but I've no idea what the differences are electronically.

General design is based on the Rat, and a friend build it for me, and the modifications are my idea & his work, I wanted to sound a bit clearer and to have a wider range and to design my own sticker ; So it's a Rat clone that doesnt really sound like a Rat anymore; I could make a sample if you want to hear it?

Yea demo it, then put it into production so you and your friend can make dough... I mean, at least from your description and enthusiasm, I'd bet it's cool.

I used to love Big Muffs, but they kinda suck live since they drop your mids out, and they seem pretty difficult to record correctly. I love fuzz, they just seem pretty situational.
I think TS808s make any amp sound pretty killer. My favorite though is the Box of Rock -- it's less of an effect and more of another channel for your amp.

Big Muff all the way, hard to translate the awesome practice sounds to live and recorded sounds though. On the plus side it's huge and has the word Muff on it.

i don't know, i've always been more of a overdrive or fuzz user. i'll die with a tonebender (and soon a duo-fuzz) in my pedalboard. for overdrive, i've always favored the boss sd-1 or the bd-2.
my favorite distortion would probably be the box of rock, it made my tweed into a marshall and has plenty of options. mine is the box of mike (the prototype i believe), which is very versatile with the extra eq.

Here is some samples of my avatar
I'm a lousy player, and the sound quality is not so great...
Overdrives, distortions and fuzzes have a huge tonal diversity amongst the different pedals available... the best way to finding what you like is to try as many as you can, since this is such a subjective area. One man's tone-machine is another man's worthless noisemaker.
For natural tube overdrive, a cranked Marshall is pretty hard to beat. My 1980 Fender Concert II (Fender's first dual channel amp) sounds absolutely incredible on the overdrive channel, so I haven't bothered to get an overdrive pedal.
For balls to the wall fuzz, the germanium Fuzz Face that I built was pretty amazing (it was a BYOC kit), until it mysteriously stopped working (I can't figure out why). Totally different sounding, but equally delicious are the Woolly Mammoth and Octave Fuzz that Mike built for me. And another favourite is the microphone channel on my Roland Microcube, although it's nowhere near being loud enough to ever be used live (or even at rehersal).
Another fav is the Rat and the Turbo Rat. I've never owned one, just played friend's pedals, so I have no idea which versions they were. As well, the old Ibanez Sonic Distortion is pretty badass.
For absolute over-the-top, chainsaw-to-the-face, turn-your-hair-white, full-on metalz, the Boss Metal Zone is tops in my opinion.
There have been many others that I've tried and liked but can't remember the name of!
The great thing about distortion effects is that there are so many different ones to choose from, so there's definitely one (probably many) out there that you'll hear and you'll say to yourself "I must have it!"
And also, more expensive pedals aren't necessarily better. I've heard some ultra cheap no name pedals that sound amazing, and I've heard expensive boutique ones that sound like ass.
