How is that Thurston model any different, aside from the colour and lack of tone knob?
BORING

Agreed: two really quite ugly guitars, with boring upgrades, ugly knobs and even some gold hardware.
Dissapointing.

A chambered like-the-real-deal body would be Ranalstic and probably unwise for Fender to realistically pull-off (financially speaking), but that sorry excuse for an F-hole on Koll's custom would still kill it if they went all the way.
So far I don't have much of an opinion of the news, really.

i'd consider a jazzblaster if they brought them out in some nice colours and didn't have some berk's signature on it. i'd never buy a sig guitar, the whole idea seems ridiculous to me.

Here's a good idea:
Fender, invent a new fucking guitar

Like what, exactly? People aren't looking for a new design in a Fender guitar....It's all about the classic models. Same with Gibson.
Every completely "new" guitar Fender has produced in the last 20 years has been a complete flop. Why waste R&D money on that, when they can sell thousands of Strats and Teles to the masses? Simple business, unfortunately. It's all about the $$$$.

Gibson is not a good yardstick to measure progress by.

It would be cool if Fender USA just let Fender Japan design their guitars. At least we'd have some interesting colours and variations on the classic designs.
Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Yes, but in my experience, the widr range reissue pickups aren't all that; sure, they're OK, but they don't come close to deserving the plaudits taht the original widerangers get (I'm really not meaning to be a corksniffer here). I think that if they are going to put humbuckers in a jazzmaster, at least put standard size ones in so there are some options to change them.
I do however recognise that a) this would no longer be like a SOnic Youth Jazzblaster, and b) that would be Fender saying "Many people aren't that impressed with our widerange reissues; let's make it easy for them to replace them.".

Mike's tele sounded nice with the RI widerangers, at least to me. I was talking more about the looks though, I haven't played the reissues (or the originals) enough to really comment on the sound.

They sound excellent if you change the pots for 1meg, not that they don't sound great before.
I am in 100% opposition to your post. I'm willing to bet
a) you've only played the neck model
b) it had 250K pots

Oh, I had a tele deluxe, and didn't like it very much. Never mind, apples and oranges, the world is a great big melting pot etc.

Just what elusive sounds were you expecting these pickups to make?
